- SUPPORT LEGAL REPRESENTATION IN IMMIGRATION DETENTION
Neither adults nor children in immigration detention have the right to a public defender – and with nearly 40,000 migrants currently held in Immigration and Customs Enforcement detention facilities, the need for representation is great. For this Giving Tuesday, let’s consider a donation to the Florence Immigrant and Refugee Rights Project, which provides those in detention with free legal and social services and advocates for systemic change. - FEEDING AMERICAIn 2022, 17 million US households were food insecure, up from 13.5 million in 2021, and some 6.4 million households with children were food insecure. Food insecurity increases the risk of chronic health conditions and undermines children’s development and learning. Feeding America is “a nationwide network of food banks, food pantries, and local meal programs.” We can see where Feeding America works in our communities using this tool. Let’s consider donating to Feeding America. Thanks to a matching challenge, any donations made by midnight 11/28 will have double the impact!
- OUR LOCAL PUBLIC LIBRARYLocal libraries are being targeted for censorship. According to the American Library Association, “censors targeted 2,571 unique titles in 2022, and of those titles, the vast majority were written by or about members of the LGBTQIA+ community or Black, Indigenous, and People of Color. Moreover, public libraries are central institutions for a thriving democracy. Let’s support our local library through our patronage and monetary gifts. There are a number of ways we can find out how to donate to our local public library: We can find our local library using this resource and call to ask how to make a donation. We look for a donate button on the website of our local library. And we can search for our public library’s Friends or Foundation organization and donate there.
- STANDING TOGETHERStanding Together is an organization of Jews and Palestinian citizens of Israel working together on peace, social justice, climate change, and economic equality. They are working to end the occupation and promote economic and social equality for all people in the region. I believe that empowering people-led peace movements in the area may be the only way to get the leaders to recognize that there is no tenable military solution to this conflict. We can donate here.
- TOGETHER RISINGTogether Rising, founded in 2012 by Glennon Doyle, is an all-women-led nonprofit organization supporting women, families, and children in crisis. They support families and individuals through direct grants of funds or goods and organization grants to partners on the ground both domestic and abroad. Since its beginning, Together Rising has raised over $45 million dollars, with a most frequent donation of $25. We can donate here.
- SUPPORTING LGBTQIA+ YOUTHAs many states have changed laws for the worse for LGBTQIA+ children and their families, Vermont is a state that has been receiving many families who have chosen to relocate. Outright Vermont is a service agency for LGBTQIA+ youth and their families that has seen an increase in need for their services. Let’s consider a donation for this “little engine that could” agency.
- HELP FIELD TEAM 6 REGISTER MORE DEMOCRATS TO WIN BIG IN 20242024 will be of our most important election years so it is more important than ever to increase the numbers of Democratic Swing State voters. Field Team 6 is a proven, efficient and highly effective organization ready to do just that. In the last two years, they have registered 1.7 million swing state voters, voters that pushed back against the expected Red Wave and elected prochoice, pro-democracy candidates. Field Team 6 is also very cost effective, delivering a new Democratic voter for only $1. Currently, their goal is to raise $3M to register 3 million new Democratic voters.
