How to frame an issue and amplify your message through supporters

How do you get your message heard when there’s a lot of noise?

Copy choir directors. Choose a song and have all your choir members sing it together in unison.

Savvy organizers use the same approach. They identify issues to mobilize supporters. Decide how to best frame the issue. Craft different messages. Test to see which one works best. And then amplify it through supporters.

It’s easier to get heard by amplifying your message through supporters using the same talking points. But how do you get those talking points to supporters when they are spread across the country, speak different languages, with different levels of presentation skills?

Framing the MAGA Government Shutdown threat

Winning Jobs Narrative specializes in designing working people-centered narrative architecture for talking about jobs, work, and the economy that resonates across race, geography, and issues. They tested different messages that resonated well in trying to explain what the impending MAGA Republican Government shutdown is all

“New Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson is an election denier and extremist who will continue MAGA Republicans’ political stunts to hurt President Biden. Johnson has called for $2 trillion in cuts to Medicare, $3 trillion in cuts to Medicaid & the Affordable Care Act, & $750 billion in cuts to Social Security. Johnson and the MAGA House will push extremist views, from gutting Social Security and Medicare to abortion to LGBTQ rights.”

Republicans have no serious plan to grow our economy, raise incomes, or lower costs—and they’re doing just the opposite. New Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson has repeatedly tried to block Medicare from negotiating lower prescription drug prices and voted against capping the cost of insulin for seniors at $35 per month. Republicans want to advance their extreme agenda by taking away the tools and opportunities hardworking Americans need to build a good life.” – Winning Jobs Narrative

Spread your message

Get your message to supporters in the form (written or spoken) and the language they prefer. This helps them understand the message, practice it and deliver it themselves with confidence.

We took the Wining Jobs Narrative message on the impending MAGA government shutdown and converted it with AI into minute long audio clips in both English and Spanish. The same message was also put into a scrolling script with the Big Stage Teleprompter in both English and Spanish. This lets supporters practice those talking points and keep the script handy on their phones in case they want to refer to it later. Organizers can revise the talking points at any time and supporters have the latest version automatically.

Winning Jobs Narrative Project

For years, right-wing politicians have hammered away on an economic message of smaller government and lower taxes, while progressives struggled to find clear and consistent language to effectively communicate about jobs and the economy. The Winning Jobs Narrative addresses this challenge by creating a narrative architecture for talking about jobs, work, and the economy in ways that strengthen our connections with working people across race, geography, and issues. A working people-centered narrative architecture for talking about jobs, work, and the economy that resonates across race, geography, and issues.

Frame an issue with the right narrative

Narrative is created through storytelling and messaging repeated over time. The five narrative elements below can be combined and layered to help build effective conversations with a broad range of audiences. – Winning Jobs Narrative Project

Heroes: Working people—and their work, spending, and contributions—power our economy. Their personal agency is paramount, and people respond most favorably to messaging that respects that agency. Small business owners may be the epitome of the working-person hero. Their initiative, responsibility, productivity, and contributions to their communities are top of mind and broadly admired.

Hard Work: Hardworking. It’s an identity and an attribute that most Americans across race and geography proudly claim. It’s not about romanticizing work. It’s more about the key things in life that hard work helps provide. Being a hardworking person is a core and deeply rewarding part of who we are and how we see ourselves.

TakeAway: Maximize the impact of your message with the right framing, and helping your supporters amplify your message.
