HOUSE SPEAKER: IT’S TIME FOR BIPARTISANSHIP
The United States still does not have fully functioning government as Rep. Jim Jordan failed yesterday to garner the required 217 votes to be elected Speaker of the House, and didn’t even get as many votes as House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (200-212). The next vote for House Speaker will likely take place today around 11AM. Twenty Republicans refused to vote for Jordan on Tuesday. This is a list of GOP House Reps in districts that President Biden won in 2020. And this is a list of the 20 House Republicans who voted against Jim Jordan on the first ballot. Let’s reach out to the Republicans on these lists, especially if they are from our district or our state, and tell them that it’s time to find a bipartisan solution to help move the country forward.

MEET WITH AN ACTION COACH
Whether we’re trying to figure out right now how we can help in this November’s important elections in Ohio and Virginia, or we’re trying to get a head start on flipping the US House blue in 2024, we may feel that we’d benefit from speaking with a seasoned activist to learn what we can do. Volunteer Blue is a “new project of more than 15 different national and regional organizations who have come together to recruit, coach, and train volunteers to work in the most important races across the country to elect Democrats.” One of their coolest programs lets us make an appointment to meet via Zoom with a coach—an actual, live person—who will explain what we can do to help elect Democrats, and help us choose those activities and actions that best fit our skills, interests, and schedules. Let’s book a session with an action coach today!

MAKE THE FOSSIL FUEL COMPANIES PAY FOR CLIMATE CHANGE
California Attorney General Rob Bonta last month filed suit against five major oil and gas companies, accusing them of a decadeslong campaign to mislead the public about the dangers of fossil fuels. California joins seven other states, the District of Columbia and multiple local governments in seeking accountability for climate damages through the courts. In addition to simple justice, the funds recovered if the lawsuits are successful can be used for disaster relief, mitigation and adaptation, putting the financial burdens of the crisis on those who profited from itLet’s reach out to the Justice Department and to our own state’s attorney general and urge them to take similar action, either directly or with this tool from the Make Polluters Pay campaign.

FEWER HIGH-SPEED PURSUITS, MORE PUBLIC SAFETY
A new study by the Police Executive Research Forum highlighted the dangers of high-speed chases by law enforcement, and recommended they be rare and limited to violent criminals who pose an imminent threatLet’s make sure we share this study with our state legislators, governors and local lawmakers, along with our law enforcement, and urge them to tighten restrictions on police pursuits to ensure public safety.

USE THIS TOOL TO KEEP TRACK OF CRUCIAL STATE/LOCAL RACES
As election season heats up, it can be useful to keep track of what’s going on in key races cross the country, where control of state and local governments, boards and ballot measures can have results that will matter to us all. The upcoming State Supreme Court race in Pennsylvania is just one such example,  and there are many more. Fortunately, Bolts Magazine  is keeping track and telling us why these races matter so much so we can then take further action if we choose. We can click here to keep an eye on important races in our own state and across the country with Bolt’s Magazine’s Cheat Sheet for the 2024 Election.

LAWYERS, TEACHERS, SOCIAL SERVICE PROVIDERS, AND MORE: LEARN HOW TO HELP CLIENTS BE BETTER SELF-ADVOCATES
The Right Question Institute “works to build a vibrant democracy where all people—even those farthest from power—can make their voices heard, participate in decisions, and advocate for themselves, their families, and their communities.” This video gives a sense of how RQI helps people. RQI is offering a free live webinar called “Fostering Client Agency Through Building Self-advocacy Skills: a Practical Strategy for Lawyers, Advocates, and Service Providers” on Wednesday, October 18 or Thursday October 26 at 1PM ET. We can read more about this webinar and register to attend here.

STATE-SPECIFIC ACTIONS
MI: HELP MICHIGAN REACH ITS CLIMATE GOALS
From a reader: Michigan’s Healthy 2050 Climate Plan seeks to achieve 100% carbon neutrality by 2050. House Bills 5120-5123, Clean Energy Jobs Act, would give the public service commission authority to permit large-scale renewable energy projects, streamlining the process for launching clean energy projects while helping MI  farmers. Let’s read about the Clean Energy Jobs Act, and let’s tell our MI state representatives that we want them to co-sponsor these bills and see them through to passage.
