How To Use DEMOGRAPHIC ANALYSIS To Run Smarter Campaigns

Savvy marketers use Demographic Analysis to find and persuade customers to buy their products.
Demographics is a fast, affordable technique works just as well in political campaigns. Use it to focus your resources on reaching and persuading your most likely voters. Understand the characteristics, likely concerns and voting patterns of people in your district. Use these insights to create persuasive campaign messaging and the best areas to canvass and channels to advertise on.
See how it’s done in this example where we search for the areas with the most elderly, democratic leaning voters in Pennsylvania’s 10th district, which is currently represented by Scott Perry (R). This analysis was done in an hour with esri software which includes the data needed for the analysis. (A nonprofit license esri licence costs less than $100/month which includes the underlying data). Read detailed instructions on how we performed this analysis here.
The esri application we used in this example does not require access to the voter file, although esri can also be used in conjunction with the voter file. Learn more about how to use Demographic Analysis for political and organizing campaigns here.

How to use demographics
Marketers know a lot about you based on your age, gender, income, education, activities, what you watch and how you get information. They use these insights to design ads, where to place those ads so the ads are most likely to persuade you to buy their product. This lets them get the most bang for every advertising dollar. Why waste money on ads that don’t work and shown to an people who do not use that product?
Savvy organizers are now borrowing this playbook from consumer marketing and apply it to run most cost-effective political campaigns. Combining demographics and mapping is especially useful to campaigns as it shows the best places to spread flyers, canvass and organize rallies to reach the most likely voters.

What is Demographics?
Demographics are statistics that describe populations and their characteristics. Demographic analysis is the study of a population-based on factors such as age, race, and sex. Demographic data refers to socioeconomic information expressed statistically, including employment, education, income, marriage rates, birth and death rates. Government agencies and corporations use demographics to learn more about a population’s characteristics for many purposes, including policy development and economic market research. For example, a company that sells high-end RVs may want to reach people nearing or at retirement age and the percentage of those who can afford their products. – Investopedia
