From TikTok to Virginia: The $2M Connection Fueling Youngkin’s Abortion Ban

Youngkin flip flops over Chinese national security threat after getting $2 million donation from TikTok investor.

More money to fund Youngkin’s campaign for an abortion ban in Virginia.

How have billionaires rigged the system for themselves? What is coin-operated politics? Block legislation that would strengthen national security? How do they get their preferred judges appointed to office? Dodge paying taxes? Help fund legislation that would strip millions of women of their freedoms? It starts with mercenary politicians who will take whatever position their billionaire donors want. Follow the money with this relationship map to see:

Coin operated politicians

“Gov. Glenn Youngkin accepted a $2 million political contribution this week from a donor with a multibillion-dollar stake in TikTok, a Chinese-owned app that the Republican governor banned from state devices late last year amid his broader campaign against Chinese influence in Virginia.

Youngkin has been courting GOP megadonors ahead of the Nov. 7 state legislative elections that are expected to determine his viability as a potential last-minute candidate for the GOP’s 2024 presidential nomination. Yass’s donation adds to Youngkin’s record-smashing haul but creates awkward optics for the governor, who had already flipped from bullish China investor to vocal China critic before Yass’s cash came his way.

“He drove away hundreds of thousands of dollars from Ford to create jobs in the Danville area because of MAGA conspiracy theories, but will accept millions of dollars to his own campaign,” House Minority Leader Don L. Scott Jr. (D-Portsmouth).” – MSN

Yass’ dollars flow everywhere

“Jeff Yass, a billionaire financier whose personal stake in TikTok’s parent company is worth a reported $21 billion, donated $2 million to Youngkin’s Spirit of Virginia political action committee. With hefty political donations, Yass has been helping TikTok rally conservatives in Washington against banning the app in the United States, the Wall Street Journal.” – MSN

  • Individuals and committees can make unlimited political donations under Pennsylvania’s relatively lax campaign finance law, and Yass, who has a roughly $28.5 billion net worth, has embraced that permissiveness.
  • He does not directly donate to candidates. Instead, he contributes money to his own political action committee, Students First. That committee gives money to another PAC, this one controlled by Matt Brouillette, a conservative activist-turned-GOP power player. That group then contributes to Commonwealth Leaders Fund.
  • Even in an odd-year election, Yass’ dollars flow everywhere, popping up in municipal races in Philadelphia and Allegheny County and in contests for statewide benches, said Eric Rosso, a leftist Philadelphia political operative who has closely tracked Yass’ political activity.
  • “The fact that he is one of the biggest, almost sole, investor in the Supreme Court should raise red flags to anybody who cares about the integrity of government,” Rosso said. – WESA

Josh & Erin Hawley

Yass’ spending is a top donor to the Club for Growth, a national conservative political group that backed Senators Pat Toomey (R – PA), Ted Cruz (R – TX) and Josh Hawley (R – MO) – Penn Live

Erin Hawley, a former Supreme Court clerk and the wife of Sen. Josh Hawley (R-Mo.), played a central role in the case that overturned Roe v. Wade and Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization.

She served as co-counsel to Mississippi Attorney General Lynn Finch and Scott Stewart, the state’s solicitor general in State Health Officer of the Mississippi Department of Health, et al. v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization. Her employer, is the Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF). Erin Hawley had clerked under Chief Justice John Roberts and her husband was a former Missouri state attorney general. – Guardian LV
