Spot the Fake: Clues To Recognize A Staged Political Rally

How do you spot the difference between a REAL political rally and one Made-For-TV?

“Folks, Stick With It”: Biden Becomes the First US President to Visit a Picket Line – Mother Jones
Questions have been raised about Donald Trump’s rally crowd in Michigan yesterday after a supporter holding up an “auto workers for Trump” sign told The Detroit News that they were not an auto worker. – The Express

Which rally is real? Which is fake? Start by asking who organized the rally? Where was it held? What is the motivation of the speakers at the rally? Follow the clues with this StoryMap.

Rally organizer

President Biden appeared on a picket line with striking United Automobile Workers. He was joined by UAW President Shawn Fain, who rode with him in the presidential limousine to the picket line.

“I find it odd he’s gonna go to a non-union business to talk to union workers,” Fain added of Trump’s visit. “I don’t think he gets it.” –  Detroit News

Rally location

Biden visits UAW picket line, tells union to ‘stick with it’.
Trump opted to give a speech at Drake Enterprises, a nonunion factory, instead of participating in the Republican debate. About 400 to 500 people attended the speech, even though Drake only employs about 150 –  Detroit News

Speaker motivation

Biden encouraged UAW workers to continue fighting for better wages despite concerns that a prolonged strike could damage the economy, saying “stick with it.” He said “yes” when asked if UAW members deserved a 40 percent raise, one of the demands that the union has made. “No deal, no wheels!” workers chanted as Biden arrived. “No pay, no parts!” –  PBS

Trump sides with Big Business. “The National Labor Relations Board, which oversees labor relations at most businesses, Trump’s court appointments, particularly to the Supreme Court, have handed unions major setbacks since he took office in 2017. “He’s not supportive of workers’ right to organize, bargain collectively or strike. Other Republican presidents said they were pro-business, or that they think labor has too much power.

Trump tells working Americans he’s on their side when everything he did was anti-union.” –  MSN

TakeAway: Don’t fall for staged Made-For-TV political rallies.
