Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas confirmed he had repeatedly accepted travel from a wealthy Republican donor over more than two decades of friendship, but added that he did not have to report the gifts on annual financial disclosure forms. Thomas has come under fire since ProPublica reported Thursday that the 74-year-old had often traveled aboard Harlan Crow’s superyacht and personal jet — even vacationing at the billionaire’s private resort in the Adirondacks. The outlet said that some of the excursions would have cost more than $500,000 if the justice and his wife, conservative activist Virginia “Ginni” Thomas, had paid for themselves. – NY Post

A memo offered options including Padua, a “first-tier city in a picturesque setting,” Venice, with its “seven-mile-long-sandbar known as Lido” and Bologna, “Italy’s most prestigious academic city.” A draft handbook for the trip, emailed to Justice Gorsuch, made clear that his teaching responsibilities would be limited to the mornings, leaving plenty of time for excursions, including planned visits to Bologna and Florence.

Luxury yacht in New Zealand. “During a New Zealand trip on Crow’s yacht, Thomas signed a copy of his memoir and gave it to a yacht worker. As a token of his appreciation, he gave one yacht worker a copy of his memoir. Thomas signed the book: “Thank you so much for all your hard work on our New Zealand adventure.” Crow’s policy was that guests didn’t pay, former Michaela Rose staff said. “You don’t need to worry about this — it’s all covered,” one recalled the guests being told. – ProPublica
