WHAT ARE WE DOING AND WHY?

One of the biggest problems we face in our perpetual swing state is addressing the voter turnout freefall that has plagued Philadelphia in recent years. Since 2020, Philly’s vote count has dropped 33%, more than any other county in PA. Low turnout in Philly is not just a 2024 problem – we also need Philly to vote this November with crucial judicial elections on the ballot, including PA Supreme Court.

To help directly address this problem with the power of volunteers, Promote the Vote PA has teamed up with non-profit partners on an ongoing voter outreach and education program encouraging low propensity voters in Philly to sign up to receive and return a mail-in-ballot.

Our 2023 Primary Program Results were very encouraging and we’re just getting started! Beginning in April 2023, volunteers helped reach 137,980 infrequent voters by phone and/or text, to encourage them to sign up to vote by mail. Through our VBM Expansion Program and with the help of dedicated volunteers from PA and across the country, we were able to sign up 3,597 voters; 2,399 of whom returned their ballots.  (66.7%). Over 76% of the targeted voters had not voted in prior municipal elections.

While it is good news that a record number of Philly voters requested mail-in ballots for the 2023 Primary, many did not return their ballots and others did not follow instructions and their votes were canceled. There is still so much work to do around voter education and that’s where the next phase of our Project begins! The PTVPA team needs your help reaching out to these voters to empower them with the information they need to ensure their voices are heard in future elections!
