Help us Fix Media Now!
Media and Democracy Project is ecstatic that Dan Froomkin, an inspiring and legendary media critic, will be joining us on July 19 at 7 pm ET. He is currently holding legacy media to account through the organization he founded, Press Watch. As Heather Cox Richardson has stated, Froomkin has “explored how U.S. news organizations have failed to communicate to readers that we are on a knife edge between democracy and authoritarianism.” He has been a journalist since the 1990’s, and once had a column devoted to presidential accountability in the washingtonpost.com. He has held positions at The Winston-Salem Journal, The Miami Herald, and the Orange County Register, Huffington Post, and the Intercept.
Help us fight for a more pro-democracy media and a better-informed America.

ACTION #2 Help fully staff the FCC. Please call your Senators this week and ask that they confirm Biden’s nominee, Anna Gomez, to the FCC. To reach your Senator’s office call the White House Switchboard at 202-456-1414
ACTION #3 Want to be a superstar and help us #FixMediaNow? Here is our bi-weekly guide with additional actions you can take.
ACTION #4 Praise Our Media and Democracy Hero of the Week:
Preston Padden, former-Fox executive who wrote about the importance of holding Fox Corporation accountable for broadcasting lies and disinformation in his recent piece “Is It Time for the FCC to Take a Close Look at Rupert Murdoch’s Licenses?”
Honorary Mention: The climate crisis affects us all but there is not adequate coverage of it by mainstream media. Reporting on it should be front page news everyday. Not doing so is an editorial choice. Two months after extreme and dangerous heating of the North Atlantic Ocean began one of the better pieces is by Umair Irfan of Vox, who wrote about the emergency.
ACTION #5 It’s Pride month – please do not allow “othering” and hate to spread. It’s the first step towards genocide. Call out Republicans coordinated assaults on LGBTQ+ rights and freedoms. How? By writing Letters to the Editor and contacting journalists who continue to “normalize” hate, violence, exclusion, and dangerous rhetoric espoused by extremist Republicans. Write a letter when you see an outlet use the term “culture war” which is a dangerous and fraudulent euphemism that hides hateful and dangerous Republican policies that harm sexual minorities.
Fox is not a news network.
Fox normalizes hatred and encourages violence against the LGBTQ+ community. As the communications arm of the Republican Party, Rupert and Lachlan Murdoch continue their assault on democracy and truth by infecting American minds with dangerous disinformation and propaganda. Media Matters for America and Mehdi Hassan call out Curt Schilling’s dog-whistle for violence (below) https://www.mediamatters.org/fox-news/fox-news-outkicks-curt-schilling-says-its-time-someone-pull-trigger-concord-american
