- SOLIDARITY WITH US AUTO WORKERS
The next few months are set for critical moments in a number of labor negotiations, including the screen actors, UPS workers and American Airlines, Southwest and United pilots. But one of the biggest may come to a head on September 14th, when the United Auto Workers’ current contract with the “Big Three” US automakers expires. The UAW is pushing for an end to wage and benefit tiers, a reinstatement of cost-of-living adjustments, stronger job security, and assurances the transition to EVs will be unionized. Where the automakers have made record profits in recent years, the workers are still at the wage and benefit levels set during the Great Recession. This week, the UAW sent a letter to members of Congress asking for their support during these negotiations. Let’s contact our representatives and senators and let them know we expect them to stand with the workers, too. - GOOGLE THREATENS ABORTION PRIVACYAfter the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, Google promised it would delete location history data of people’s visits to abortion clinics. Long story short: Google has not done so. This is worrisome, as this location data could be accessed or subpoenaed by prosecutors seeking to enforce anti-abortion laws against women and other pregnant people, and against reproductive health providers. Let’s (1) report Google to the Federal Trade Commission for fraud on the grounds that Google has misled the public about its data privacy practices, and (2) tell our Members of Congress to protect our reproductive and sexual health data by co-sponsoring the My Body My Data Act: in the Senate, S.1656 introduced by Senator Mazie Hirono (D-HI); in the House, H.R.3420 introduced by Rep. Sara Jacobs (D-CA-51)
- ASK MOCS TO ADDRESS SHORTAGE OF CANCER DRUGSAccording to the Food and Drug Administration, life-saving drug shortages are at an all time high, and health care providers are having to ration care for cancer patients due to the limited availability of carboplatin, a first line chemo-therapy defense for many common cancers. Pharmaceutical spokespeople point to the lack of profitability as one of the reasons for the shortage. And while a White House team is working on the immediate issue, Congressional intervention is needed for a long-term solution. Let’s make sure our MoCs are aware of this problem and ask them what they’ve done (or will do) to address it.
- CLEAN VOTER ROLLS“The Electronic Registration Information Center (ERIC) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, nonpartisan organization composed of state election officials. As of 2023, the ERIC website said the organization ‘[helps] election officials maintain more accurate voter rolls and detect possible illegal voting.'” Ballotpedia reports that 8 Republican-led states have left this organization in the past year, citing privacy concerns — but this trend really seems to be the result of a concerted right-wing effort to discredit ERIC without evidence. Let’s look at Ballotpedia’s map to see where our state stands with respect to ERIC membership, and let’s tell our state legislators and Secretary of State that we want clean voter rolls, and therefore we support our state’s membership in ERIC.
- BIPARTISANSHIP FOR THE WINThe successful bipartisanship debt ceiling/budget bill shows that some of our lawmakers in DC still respect the notion of working across the aisle. As with most bipartisan efforts, neither side was completely happy, but both sides got enough to make the agreement workable. Biden has a long history of seeking bipartisanship and doing the necessary work involved. A recent study has shown that legislators who draw in cosponsors from both sides of the aisle are more effective lawmakers. Let’s tell our MoCs that we want to see more bipartisanship from them and that we will be using their willingness and ability to do so as a measure of fitness for office come election time.
CORRECTIONS AND UPDATES
The second link in this entry was broken in yesterday’s List. Here is the correction. Thanks to our readers for keeping us honest!
- NC – OPPOSE ATTACKS ON PUBLIC SCHOOLSPublic education in North Carolina is under assault, with the GOP supermajority pushing forward efforts to expand school vouchers and the privatization of public education in stand-alone bills and the upcoming state budget. Governor Roy Cooper is rallying the public to fight back, pushing for public school teacher pay hikes instead of public money going to private schools. Let’s contact our legislators and tell them we agree with Governor Cooper and want them to oppose attacks on public schools.
