Progressive Pressure Impacted the Debt Ceiling Deals

Of course we’re disappointed with the ‘red lines’ crossed on adding new work requirements and including the West Virginia pipeline in the debt ceiling deal, proving not only Republicans but also Joe Manchin were willing to hold US taxpayers hostage for leverage. In the end, Democrats delivered more votes to pass the measure than Republicans – in both the House and Senate. Including Thompson, Feinstein and Padilla. But it was progressive pressure that gutted the most stringent work requirements and actually expanded SNAP benefits to the homeless, veterans and former foster care children without work requirements.

The debt ceiling was not raised; it was suspended until January 2025 – we still need to work to eliminate the debt ceiling to avoid these hostage taking events. Doing so means a pivot to electing more true Democrats to win back the House and get a real majority in the Senate along with re-electing Joe Biden in 2024. Yes, it’s time to think about 2024!

Want to fight for LGBTQ+ people’s rights, reproductive rights, and voting rights? Registering voters is the #1 most effective way to do all these things!

Sign up now to join Indivisible Yolo to register voters at the Merced County Fair. The Democrat Adam Gray lost by 500 votes in the 2022 election to Republican John Duarte. This district is one of the races that is flippable in 2024 to win back the House of Representatives.

No experience is necessary. We’ll start with a 15-minute training at the staging site located in the parking lot at 11th and G street, Merced, CA and deploy at the Fair Grounds. We’ll have clipboards, voter registration forms, stickers and pens. Just bring your smartphone or tablet if you have one, (a mask), a little water, sunscreen, and some comfortable shoes.

NOTE: If possible, wear a liberal-looking t-shirt, hat, or pin! It really helps. Bring a friend! Can’t wait to see you there!
