- SPEAK OUT AGAINST TEXAS GOVERNOR’S INTENT TO PARDON THE MURDERER OF A BLACK LIVES MATTER PROTESTORThe Republican party claims to be for law and order, except when they support Kyle Rittenhouse, the January 6th insurrectionists, and now Daniel Perry, an Uber Driver convicted in a jury trial of murdering a protester in a Black Lives Matter demonstration. Perry just received a 25-year sentence for the murder, and despite his disturbing history of blatantly racist comments on social media, Governor Abbott has held steadfast in his intention to pardon him. Let’s contact Governor Abbott’s office and the Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles and tell them Perry deserves no special treatment and we object to the governor’s blatant playing of politics and going against the justice system.
- PROTECT ELECTION WORKERS FROM EXTREMIST THREATS
The Washington Post recently profiled Bill Gates, the Republican supervisor in Maricopa County who became the target of right-wing rage for refusing to play along with their election lies, focusing on the personal toll it’s taken on him. Gates isn’t the only one, as we’ve seen a flood of threats to election workers at all levels in the wake of the Big Lie. In April, Senators Amy Klobuchar and Richard Durbin reintroduced the Election Worker Protection Act (S.1318), which would provide states with more resources to recruit, train, and ensure the safety of the folks who make our democracy work. Let’s contact our senators and tell them to move this important legislation forward in time to help in 2024.
- RESPOND TO CNN GIVING TRUMP A PLATFORMLast week, CNN provided Trump with a platform in which to spew his continual lies, ridicule, and disinformation, in front of an audience of his supporters, no less. Having the feeling of more a Trump rally than a news program, many wonder just what CNN was thinking. Free speech is one thing, but giving a microphone to a known liar is reprehensible. While his base will always support him, fallout from the CNN town hall is mostly negative. We can add our voices by using CNN’s feedback form, message them or comment on their Facebook page, or tweet them @cnn. We can also email CNN CEO Chris Licht and press contacts Dylan Rose Geerlings and Anna Jager.
- ENCOURAGE COMPANIES TO SPEAK OUT AGAINST ANTI-TRANS LEGISLATIONScoop Inc. is the first North Carolina business that is openly speaking out against anti-trans bills pending in the state legislature, while other companies that were active in using their economic clout to repeal the proposed “bathroom bill” in 2016 have remained silent. This does not portend well for the LGBTQIA community and their allies. If there are anti-trans bills in our state, let’s contact companies with a major presence where we live and tell them that in order to gain our dollars and support, we expect them to follow examples like Scoop and Disney and use their economic power to advocate for treating all people of all identities with dignity and respect.
- VETERANS FOR PROGRESSIVE POLICIES“Started in 2006, VoteVets PAC and VoteVets Action Fund have been the home for progressive veterans, military families, and their civilian supporters…” VoteVets conducts public issue campaigns on progressive issues and works to elect veterans running for office as Democrats. Let’s check out their website and learn how we can help.
STATE-SPECIFIC ACTIONS
- CA: PHONE BANK FOR HOUSING JUSTICE WITH WORKING PARTNERSHIPS USAWorking Partnerships USA, based in Silicon Valley works to change the roots of inequality and poverty through collaborative campaigns that promote quality jobs, thriving communities, equitable growth, and a vibrant democracy. Currently, their focus is on an issue that deeply affects Californians: housing justice. A recent study conducted by Policy Link, a national institute dedicated to advancing racial and economic justice, has shed light on the various factors contributing to California’s ongoing housing inequity crisis. These factors include heightened speculation, reduced investments in affordable housing, insufficient renter protections, the criminalization of homelessness, and policies that perpetuate racial inequities for profit. Now, Working Partnerships USA is mobilizing voters to drive change and we can help. We can join them in phoning San Jose voters and advocating for housing justice and renter’s rights. Phone banking will be going on through May, on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 4:30 – 7pm PDT, so we can pick a time that works for us. No need to worry about experience—they provide training! While we are phoning San Jose voters, this action will also be in concert with the statewide movement “We Are California” contacting voters across the state, so the impact can be significant. Together, we have the power to make a difference, so let’s work towards a fairer and more just society with Working Partnerships USA! Let’s find out more about phone banking for housing justice and renter’s rights with Working Partnerships USA here.
- ME – NO LABELS PARTY MISLED VOTERSThe No Labels party may have misled Maine voters who thought they were signing a petition to support getting the party on the ballot. However, citizens were “actually registering as a member of a new No Labels party.” The Maine Secretary of State is working on contacting these signers to verify their intentions. If we think we may be one of those signers, let’s contact the Secretary of State to make sure that our real intentions are honored.
