- YOUTH VOTER TURNOUT TARGETEDIn the 2022 midterm election, the youth vote, those under 30, was the second highest it had been in three decades. Michigan youth led the way with 37% of eligible voters voting. While those numbers seem low, we all know that voting is the bedrock of our democracy and getting people registered and encouraging them to vote is important work. The Democrats are making inroads in the youth vote, but Republicans have targeted youth in their voter suppression tactics. An election denier told a private group of Republicans recently that “conservatives must do more to limit voting on university campuses and pursue other ways to make voting more difficult for young people and others who are more likely to oppose the GOP.” Let’s help keep the youth vote alive and kicking by checking in with any of these groups to see how we can help: 1) Youth Voter Movement, 2) NextGen America, 3) Field Team 6, or 4) Rock the Vote.
- LEARN TO FIGHT CLIMATE CHANGE DISINFORMATION
While Climate Change remains a huge threat to our planet, the fossil fuel industry continues its fight against meaningful change. Switching from outright denial, they have become more subtle in their messaging strategies, using claims such as clean energy being too expensive and costing jobs to persuade the public. This allows them to stay under the radar and prevent climate issues from becoming headline news. It’s time for us to call them out, to speak out against this disinformation and educate our communities about the local impacts of climate change. Fortunately, Indivisible can help us craft specific messages, and, if we choose, to hold local trainings, to counteract this tide of disinformation. We can check out Indivisible’s guide to fighting Climate Change Disinformation here.
- FLIP THE HOUSE 2024Activate America, formerly Flip the West, is an organization dedicated to mobilizing voters to elect Democrats in the House and Senate through postcarding, phone banking, texting, and canvassing opportunities. Right now, the organization is focusing on flipping 11 House seats in California and New York, all of which President Biden won in the 2020 presidential election. Let’s join Activate America in writing postcards to voters in these districts, and work towards flipping the House back to Democratic control in 2024.
- TRANSGENDER INCLUSIONAmid threats of boycotts from angry customers, Anheuser-Busch has forced two of its vice-presidents of marketing, Alissa Heinerscheid and Daniel Blake, into a “leave of absence” for their role in getting “influencer” Dylan Mulvaney, who is transgender, to promote the company’s Bud Light beer. Company executives clearly need to see that we do not want employees to be punished for acting on transgender inclusion, and we do not want our fellow citizens who are transgender to be sacrificed for profit. Let’s tell Anheuser-Busch to stand up to hate. We can write to U.S. CEO Brendan Whitworth, Anheuser-Busch Companies, LLC, One Busch Place, St. Louis, MO 63118, and/or email https://www.anheuser-busch.com/contact-us, and/or call 1-800-342-5283.
- MENTAL HEALTH SUPPORT FOR THOSE WHO HAVE SERVED THEIR TIMEThe National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) is urging support for the bipartisan Reentry Act, which, if enacted, would provide Medicaid coverage for mental health and substance use treatment for people leaving prison. There’s research showing that incarcerated people with mental illness who receive treatment when they are released from prison are less likely to re-offend. Let’s tell our U.S. Senators to co-sponsor S.1165 and our U.S. Representatives to co-sponsor H.R.2400.
