PUBLIC FUNDING FOR ELECTIONS

PLEASE  CALL REP YAMASHITA TO SCHEDULE A HEARING FOR SB1543 SD2

TELL HIM TO PASS IT OUT OF FINANCE

PLEASE CALL OR EMAIL REPRESENTATIVE YAMASHITA, CHAIR OF THE HOUSE FINANCE COMMITTEE, TO ASK HIM TO SCHEDULE A HEARING FOR SB 1543 SD2 AND TO PASS IT

SB 1543 SD2 relates to public funding for local elections (governor, lieutenant governor, senators, representatives, mayors, city council members, prosecutors, and OHA). This bill provides public funding to qualified candidates, following a model successfully used in Connecticut and Maine. Candidates who choose public funding must start with a certain level of support. (For example, a candidate for the State House must gather 125 contributions of $5 each to qualify.) The goal is to prevent demand for money from people who are not serious about running. Qualified candidates will receive funding at a level that has been found to be adequate for a campaign for that office in other states. Candidates who choose this support cannot receive funding from other sources.SB 1543 SD2 has been referred to the House Finance Committee, chaired by Representative Kyle Yamashita. CHAIR YAMASHITA’S OFFICE IS TRACKING HOW MANY REQUESTS THEY RECEIVE FOR SCHEDULING OF VARIOUS BILLS AND HAS ENCOURAGED US TO CALL OR EMAIL HIS OFFICE REQUESTING HIM TO SCHEDULE SB 1543 SD2 FOR A HEARING BEFORE THE FINANCE COMMITTEE.Please add your voice to help ensure that this bill gets scheduled. If Chair Yamashita does not schedule this bill for a hearing, it will die.Phone: 808-586-6330
