- RESTORE BANKING REGULATIONS TRUMP ROLLED BACK
In the wake of the collapse of multiple mid-sized banks, a new spotlight is shining on the Trump-era rollback of enhanced safety protections against these kinds of financial failures. Senator Elizabeth Warren and Rep. Katie Porter yesterday announced legislation to restore extra scrutiny to banks with assets between $50 billion and $250 billion. Let’s contact our members of Congress and urge them to support this legislation and fight for it to come to the floor as soon as possible. - IMPROVE REPORTING OF HATE CRIMES
According to a recent report by the FBI, hate crimes increased 11.6% from 2020 to 2021, with 65% related to race/ethnicity, 16% related to sexual orientation and 14% related to religion. Yet, the Department of Justice has warned that hate crimes are severely underreported, especially in the South where just a handful of police departments in Florida, Arkansas and Alabama reported any hate crimes at all. Let’s contact our local police departments and ask them for an accounting of hate crimes reported in our city or town, and if they aren’t reporting any hate crimes, let’s organize with our neighbors and local officials to get them to change their policy.
- DEFEND ABORTION RIGHTS IN COURT
Abortion is currently illegal in nearly half the states in the U.S., with some of those states going further to criminalize people who provide or undergo an abortion. Because of this, there is a stark need for legal representation for healthcare providers, patients, and supporters. Advocates are stepping up to fill this need, with the ACLU creating the Abortion Criminal Defense Initiative (ACDI) and joining with multiple other advocacy groups to form the Abortion Defense Network. For those of us with the means, let’s donate what we can. If we, or someone we know, needs legal representation relating to abortion care, we can fill out the intake form here or refer them to the hotline for those who have had or are seeking abortion care here. We can also share this information on social media or within our communities to ensure that anyone who needs it can access help.
- SAVE SOCIAL SECURITY AND MEDICARE
Over the weekend, Senator John Kennedy (R-LA) again suggested we need to consider raising the retirement age for Social Security eligibility. Let’s contact our representatives in Congress to tell them to sign on to a letter promising they’ll fight against any cuts to Social Security and Medicare. - STOP THE SCAPEGOATING OF TRANS PEOPLE
Republicans do what autocrats everywhere do: scapegoat minorities to shore up power. Among the groups that Republicans are singling out for this dangerous treatment is trans people. According to the Trans Legislation Tracker, more than a dozen anti-trans bills have been introduced into Congress, and more than 400 have been filed in the states. Let’s use the tracker to identify these bills, and let’s tell our state and federal lawmakers to oppose them. We can also keep ourselves informed and in the fight for trans rights by signing up for daily updates from independent researcher Erin Reed.

The Handgun Permit to Purchase Act (House, Senate) would create a federal grant program “to incentivize state and local governments to enact laws requiring individuals to obtain a license from law enforcement before purchasing a handgun.” Let’s tell our Senators to co-sponsor S.117 and our Representative to co-sponsor H.R.569.
