- HELP JUDGE JANET #FLIPTHECOURT IN WISCONSIN
It’s official: Judge Janet Protasiewicz (pronounced pro-tuh-say-witz) will be the left’s candidate for a seat on the Wisconsin Supreme Court that would give progressives their first majority since 2008. The election is April 4th, giving us just five weeks to help her secure a win that could flip the court, protect abortion rights in Wisconsin, end gerrymandering, and help ensure access to the ballot box ahead of the 2024 presidential race. Her opponent will be Daniel Kelly, a Trump endorsee who was recently revealed to have been in contact with those scheming to push forward Trump’s fake electors, is funded by the same right-wing billionaire who backed Ron Johnson and Roy Moore, and has bragged about his endorsement by anti-choice extremists. Let’s get to work! - PROTECT THE RIGHT TO ASYLUM
Despite claiming to disavow Trump’s Title 42, the “return to Mexico” rule, Biden’s Homeland Security and DOJ have announced a proposed new regulation that’s troublingly similar. This one, expected to begin in May, would penalize asylum-seekers who cross the border illegally or fail to apply for protection in the nations they pass through en route to the United States. Activists have argued it ignores the fact that under U.S. immigration law, migrants fleeing persecution can request asylum regardless of how they arrive on U.S. soil. Let’s join the Florence Project and other advocates for immigrants in submitting a comment through the federal register opposing this new rule, and write the White House directly to share our objections.
- FOOD SECURITY FOR ALL
As of March 1st, the federal government will end “pandemic era” supplements to SNAP (once food stamps) payments to low-income households. Before 2020, these payments averaged $200/month; the pandemic supplement guaranteed at least an additional $95. We must press the White House and Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack ((202) 456-1111) to provide for people who will not be able to afford food once this program is ended.
- ERA SENATE HEARING TOMORROW
Tomorrow, Tuesday, February 28th at 10AM EST/ 7AM PT, the Senate Judiciary Committee will host a hearing on FINALLY making the Equal Rights Amendment part of the Constitution. The Committee Chair, Sen. Dick Durbin, has been a proponent of this cause for years. We can watch here: http://bit.ly/3IgjmvY. If our senator is on the committee, let’s tell them to adopt the #ERANow!
- REVERSE THE HYDE AMENDMENT
House Democrats have reintroduced a bill that would end the Hyde Amendment restrictions on taxpayer funding for abortion, requiring Medicaid and other federal health insurance plans to cover abortion services and preventing the federal government from interfering with abortion coverage by private insurance. While the Equal Access to Abortion Coverage in Health Insurance (EACH) Act is unlikely to move forward in this Congress, it would benefit millions of Americans on Medicaid, Native American and Indigenous people who use the Indian Health Services, people in federal prisons and detention centers, and federal employees and members of the military, and remains a disruptive notion after years of bipartisan support for Hyde. Let’s tell our members of Congress that all women, regardless of socio-economic status, deserve to be protected from forced pregnancy, and that we want them to co-sponsor H.R. 561, the EACH Act of 2023. MI: GUN SAFETY LEGISLATION INTRODUCED
In the same week as the tragic MSU mass shooting, 11 gun safety bills were introduced in the Michigan legislature. With rising gun deaths, this kind of legislation is essential to our safety. With the now Democratic trifecta in Michigan, there is the best chance ever that these bills may pass and become law. Let’s let our state representatives and state senators know that we support this kind of legislation. Let’s also join Red Wine and Blue by signing this letter to state officials.
