We’re winning
Last night Donald Trump announced that he still wants to be the center of attention. The night before that, AP announced the comeuppance of Kari Lake, the Trumpiest and most obnoxious of the many election deniers running in 2022. The midterms are not over yet (you can still help, see below), but this might be a good time to look back at what’s happened over the past few months, and especially at what we have accomplished.
- We turned the great “red wave” into a drip. We held the Senate for Democrats and, if we win the Georgia runoff (which we will), added to the Democratic majority.
- We helped American voters express their disgust with election denial and abortion extremism. Even the defeated MAGAs have noticed and are actually conceding their races.
- We humbled the press, the pundits, and the pollsters, encouraging them (we hope) to clean up their act.
- We re-elected Tony Evers and Gretchen Whitmer, our progressive Democratic governors in Wisconsin and Michigan; flipped Michigan’s state legislature from red to blue; and prevented the MAGA fringe from gaining a veto-proof majority in Wisconsin.
- We helped Illinois congresspersons Lauren Underwood and Sean Casten defend their seats against the Republican barrage of dark money and attack ads.
- We preserved the Democratic majority on the Illinois Supreme Court, ensuring that our state will remain a haven for women’s reproductive rights and freedoms.
- We weakened Trump and set the stage for a Republican implosion running up to 2024. It’s already begun: stand back and watch the fun!
We didn’t get everything we wanted, but we made a lot of progress. And we’re learning that resisting Trumpism is not an event, it’s a process. Bigotry and ignorance will always be with us; we have to keep our guard up and our heads down. So relish the moment and enjoy the holidays. We have much to be thankful for! And come back in the new year ready to continue the work that’s brought us this far.
