Taking Action Together to Counter White Supremacist Terrorism

6 mins read

It’s clear now that Saturday’s deadly attack on shoppers and workers at a Tops grocery store in Buffalo wasn’t a random or isolated act of violence. It was domestic terrorism targeting Black Americans, stoked by the spread of the white-supremacist conspiracy ideology known as the Great Replacement Theory.

The growth of white nationalist rhetoric and violence is frightening, but we aren’t powerless against it. Individually, we can take steps like speaking up when we encounter bigotry in all its forms (Southern Poverty Law Center has helpful tips here). Or holding advertisers and cable companies accountable for enabling the spread of Tucker Carlson’s and Fox News’s brand of virulent racism.

Individual actions matter, but at Indivisible Yolo we believe community action can be even more powerful. The calls to action we’ve listed in this week’s newsletter may seem unrelated at first glance—canvassing in Renocalling Arizona votersworking to elect a DA willing to tackle racial bias in our criminal justice system. But they’re all connected to IY’s mission to expand our majorities with progressive Democrats who will fight—for democracy, against racism, against antisemitism, against hate in all its forms.

Please take a look at the work IY’s volunteer community is doing right now. We hope you’ll join us.

Canvass in Reno with Walk Team Yolo: May and June

If Republicans gain power in the House and Senate this year, they’ll push even more aggressively to roll back civil rights gains of the past five decades. That’s why our volunteers are on the ground early in Nevada, a critical swing state. We’re knocking on doors of pro-environment voters who don’t vote regularly, to encourage them to cast their ballot in Nevada’s June 14 primary election. Data shows that when people get in the habit of voting in primary elections, they’re highly likely to vote in every election.

We’d love to have you join us. Don’t worry if you’ve never canvassed before; our Walk Team leaders are very well-organized, they’ll teach you everything you need to know (it’s easy!), and they can even pair you up with experienced canvassers.

Call Arizona Voters with Call Team Yolo
Join us on Zoom as we make calls to Arizona voters to get out the vote for Mitzi Epstein, a proudly pro-choice woman running for Arizona’s State Senate. Our work to elect Mitzi will also turn out voters to flip the governor’s seat, keep Sen. Mark Kelly in the U.S. Senate, and elect a Democratic Secretary of State. We love to have first time phone bankers and will teach you everything you need to know.

  • Sunday, May 22, 3-5 p.m. Phonebank for Mitzi Epstein for AZ State Senate

Bans Off Our Bodies
What a tremendous turnout at Saturday’s #BansOffOurBodies rally and march in Sacramento! Thank you to all who showed up. That same day, rallies took place in hundreds of cities nationwide to demonstrate that the majority of Americans support keeping abortion legal.

We’ll keep you updated on opportunities for action in the weeks ahead, including rapid-response mobilizations after a decision comes down from the Supreme Court, as well as nationwide marches planned for July 9th.

And as always:
