Hello Ventura Indivisians and fans of pro-reproductice justice!

This Saturday, May 14th, is the big day! Break in your walking shoes and get your pro-Roe signs ready! There are actually two events happening back to back – Diversity Collective’s AIDS Walk fundraiser, at 9:00 am and Planned Parenthood’s “Bans Off Our Bodies” at 12:00 pm. Both are happening in downtown Ventura’s beautiful Plaza Park, across from the main post office. (Do NOT confuse this with Oxnard’s Plaza Park. Our county apparently favors consistency over creativity in the naming of parks.)

Short break for terminology update. Framing is a constantly evolving field and we learn something new every day.

– Words and images Planned Parenthood wants to raise awareness on:

  • Hanger imagery or language. “This imagery perpetuates the idea that abortion in a post-Roe world will be dangerous, and it may deter people from seeking care. Today, we have medication abortion, which is extremely common, safe, and effective. We want everyone to know that medication abortion exists, is an option, and that we are going to fight to ensure there is access.”
  • Handmaid’s Tale imagery or language. “Abortion restrictions and bans are not new. Many women and trans people have faced barriers to care due to racism, classism, ableism, homophobia, transphobia, and other systems of oppression. This is not some dystopian future but a current reality for many people who can become pregnant.”

– Take away the opposition’s term: Instead of their “Pro-Life”, we always use the more accurate “forced-birth/forced-birther” terminology when discussing what is essentially a war crime.
– But can we do better than “pro-choice?” We just read this article ( Adoptees are pretty unhappy at being commodified by the GOP, who want us to believe that adoption is a harmless activity for both babies and birth mothers (Actually, we don’t think they give a fig about the birth mothers) This quote struck us:
“Several adoptees said they view themselves not as “pro-choice” but as “pro-reproductive justice.” Aguila described reproductive justice as “the right to parent or not parent” and to have resources and community and government support should someone choose to be a parent. So…“Pro-Repro-Justice” for us!

12:00 pm – 1:00 pm LUNCH BREAK!: Go support Ventura’s amazing downtown, just a block from the event site! Main Street has blocked off vehicular traffic, so ramble, check out our numerous restaurants with outdoor patios, and their diverse menu offerings.

EVENT: Saturday – 05/14/2022 – VENTURA – “BANS OFF OUR BODIES (1:00 pm PT) Plaza Park, downtown Ventura
No abortion bans, PERIOD.
– Our bodies are our own — if they are not, we cannot be truly free or equal. Across the country, some politicians are trying to make decisions about our bodies for us. We won’t let the abortion bans sweeping the country put our lives and futures at risk, and we won’t be silenced while our fundamental right to control our bodies is taken away.
– Everyone deserves health care that’s free of shame, stigma, or judgment. Together, we say: Get your bans off our bodies!
– Join us on May 14 at Plaza Park in downtown Ventura (across from the main post office) for a demonstration of our collective outrage on the attacks on abortion nationwide and call for an end to abortion bans.

Your Calls to Action (Federal):

Tell your senators to vote “YES” on H.R. S.1975 – The Women’s Health Protection Act of 2021, over and over again!  (more info)

Minimal script for cosponsor: I’m calling from [zip code]. I want to thank Sen. [___] for cosponsoring S.1975] – the “Women’s Health Protection Act” I agree with Sen. Tammy Duckworth that Senate Democrats should keep the focus on this issue by bringing this bill to the floor every single week. I also expect Sen. [___] to explore all options to overturning this miscarriage of settled law, including removing the filibuster. Not only would that protect the rights of all those affected by the reversal of Roe v. Wade, it would quickly fix other injustices, such as statehood for DC, voting rights, the Equality Act, Medicare-for-All, climate change protection bills and rescinding the Hyde Amendment.
(Watch this video with Sen. Duckworth –

  • Who is my representative/senator?:

Expand and rebalance this lawless Court with H.R. 2584/S.1141 – Judiciary Act of 2021. It no longer represents the American public.(more info)

An unelected conservative majority on the Supreme Court, appointed by two presidents who both lost the popular vote, is going to overturn 50 years of precedent and end our constitutional right to an abortion, according to a leaked draft. (…/supreme-court-abortion-draft…)

They have also signaled their intention to overturn marriage equality, end access to contraception, gut protections for women of color and more.

Minimal script: I’m calling from [zip code] and I want Sen./Rep. [___] to immediately cosponsor and support H.R. 2584/S.1141 – the “Judiciary Act of 2021“. This court no longer represents the interests of the majority of Americans. This unelected, unrepresentative Dark money Supreme Court has gone rogue, and overthrowing Roe v. Wade is the last straw. We need to expand the court NOW to represent all 13 circuits and the needs of the American people.

Don’t hand your reproductive privacy to authoritarians without a fight. Stop law enforcement and extremist access to our data. (more info)

Sample email script to your representative: I’m calling from [zip code] and I want Rep. [___] to cosponsor and pass H.R.6416 – Banning Surveillance Advertising Act of 2022, and H.R.2738 – The Fourth Amendment Is Not for Sale Act to protect both our privacy and the integrity of our constitutional rights. Any bill passed should include restrictions on precision geo-fencing, not allowing companies to track people within a radius of 1850 feet, as in effect with the California Privacy Rights Act (“CPRA”).

Sample email script to both senators: I’m calling from [zip code] and I want Senator [___] to pass S. 1975, the Women’s Health Protection Act, which would protect abortion access for all Americans. In addition, I want the Senator to cosponsor and pass S.3520 – Banning Surveillance Advertising Act of 2022, and S.1265 – The Fourth Amendment Is Not for Sale Act to protect both our privacy and the integrity of our constitutional rights. Any bill passed should include restrictions on precision demo-fencing, not allowing companies to track people within a radius of 1850 feet, as in effect with the California Privacy Rights Act (“CPRA”).

Read Up On Other Liberties At Risk

There are a lot of “unenumerated” constitutional liberties that are put at risk with this opinion. Regardless of whether you hold a legal degree, you can read up on what those liberties are and how they might be impacted in this very helpful paper from the Center for Reproductive Rights.

Another pretty essential resource on reproductive rights is the Guttmacher Institute, which has a wealth of policy analysis. In particular, see
