Emergency Rally to defend Roe v. Wade! (and two quick phone calls)

At 5pm local time TODAY (May 3rd), we are joining Americans across the nation who are showing up at courthouses and federal buildings to say bans off our bodies!

We will be at the Ventura County Government Center, on the sidewalk at the corner of Victoria Ave. and Telephone Road.

Bring your families, your signs, your stories, your heart, and your commitment to save Roe and access to safe and legal abortion for all who need it.

We will also have a voter registration table available for the young people whose future we must now fight for.

Thank you – and know this is just the beginning. We’re going to keep showing up in larger actions in the days, weeks, and months to come.

By participating in this event, you agree

(i) not to engage in any act of violence or violation of any applicable law,

(ii) to obey the orders of authorized event marshals and law enforcement authorities, and

(iii) that event organizers and sponsors will not be responsible for any injury or damage to your person or property resulting from or occurring in the course of your participating in the event, and you agree to release and forever hold harmless event organizers and sponsors, and their respective officers, directors, employees, and agents from liability for any such injury or damage.

We are committed to maintaining public health measures to practice safe protesting during the pandemic. All event participants are expected to have weighed their own risk in attending, and follow all local safety guidelines. Individual hosts are responsible for compliance with their own local laws and event requirements (including orders limiting the sizes of events). Additionally, a core principle shared by supporting organizations is a commitment to nonviolent, peaceful actions. All actions sponsored or organized on this page are intended to be nonviolent and peaceful. We expect all participants to act lawfully at all times and to seek to de-escalate any potential confrontation with those who disagree with our values.

Action #1: Tell your senators to vote “YES” on H.R. S.1975 – The Women’s Health Protection Act of 2021 (more info)

Minimal script for cosponsor: I’m calling from [zip code]. I want to thank Sen. [___] for cosponsoring S.1975] – the “Women’s Health Protection Act.” I’m angry that the Supreme Court essentially overturned Roe v Wade by not ruling Texas’ SB8 – the “heartbeat” forced-birther law, blatantly unconstitutional. They shirked their job and now we need [him/her] to step up and push this bill onto the floor right away. It’s possible that [his/her] own constitutents could be sued by forced-birther vigilantes if they offer aid to women in Texas. I expect Sen. [___] to explore all options to overturning this miscarriage of settled law, including removing the filibuster to ensure the rights of women to make decisions for themselves and their families.

Minimal script for NON-cosponsor: I’m calling from [zip code]. I want Sen. [___] to know that I’m angry that the Supreme Court essentially overturned Roe v Wade by not ruling Texas’ SB8 – the “heartbeat” forced-birther law, blatantly unconstitutional. They shirked their job and now legislators have to step up, so I want to know why Sen. [___] hasn’t signed on as a cosponsor of Sen. = S.1975] – the “Women’s Health Protection Act.” It’s possible that [his/her] own constitutents could be sued by forced-birther vigilantes if they offer aid to women in Texas. What they’re doing to protect the rights of women to decide on matters of the health and welfare of themselves and their families?

Action #2: Expand and rebalance this lawless Court with H.R. 2584/S.1141 – Judiciary Act of 2021. It no longer represents the American public. (more info)

An unelected conservative majority on the Supreme Court, appointed by two presidents who both lost the popular vote, is going to overturn 50 years of precedent and end our constitutional right to an abortion, according to a leaked draft. (https://www.politico.com/…/supreme-court-abortion-draft…)

They have also signaled their intention to overturn marriage equality, end access to contraception, gut protections for women of color and more.

Minimal script: I’m calling from [zip code]and I want Sen./Rep. [___] to know that I’m furious with the Supreme Court’s refusal to defend 50 years of precedence regarding women’s right to reproductive choice for their own health and for their families. I want [him/her] to immediate cosponsor and support H.R. 2584/S.1141 – the “Judiciary Act of 2021“. This court no longer represents the interests of the majority of Americans. This shadow docket ruling, done with no notice or accountability, by right-wing dark-money-funded justices is enraging, as were their similar decisions supporting Trump’s cruel “Remain in Mexico” policy and their overriding of the CDC’s eviction moratorium duing a pandemic. This unelected, unrepresentative Supreme Court has gone rogue, and overthrowing Roe v. Wade is the last straw. We need to expand the court NOW to represent all 13 circuits and the needs of the American people.

Donation Options

There are many groups sharing where people can donate to help people obtain abortions. This is a great document that shares funds for all 50 states: tinyurl.com/donate-for-abortions

Read Up On Other Liberties At Risk

There are a lot of “unenumerated” constitutional liberties that are put at risk with this opinion. Regardless of whether you hold a legal degree, you can read up on what those liberties are and how they might be impacted in this very helpful paper from the Center for Reproductive Rights. tinyurl.com/Roe-timeline

Another pretty essential resource on reproductive rights is the Guttmacher Institute, which has a wealth of policy analysis. In particular, see https://www.guttmacher.org/abortion-rights-supreme-court
