As the Supreme Court hears oral arguments in cases challenging Texas’ draconian new abortion law, a leading reproductive health care advocate from Florida criticized Marco Rubio for his long anti-choice record that includes supporting extreme judges who allowed Texas’ abortion ban to go into effect.
“Marco Rubio’s opposition to safe and legal abortion is fundamentally out of step with his constituents in Florida where a strong majority support Roe v. Wade and don’t want politicians taking away our freedom to make health care decisions with our doctors and families,” said Laura Goodhue, Executive Director of the Florida Alliance of Planned Parenthood Affiliates.
Rubio has long held extreme and dangerous anti-reproductive rights views. In an interview shortly after it went into effect, Marco Rubio defended the basis for Texas’ new anti-abortion law. He attacked Roe v. Wade, calling it a “catastrophe” with “horrifying” results and vowed to back anti-choice judges who will overturn it. Rubio has also opposed abortion in all circumstances, even in the case of rape, incest, or a threat to the mother’s life.
Florida Democratic Party Chair Congratulates the Winners of the Nov. 2, 2021 Elections
fter a night that saw the election of Ken Welch, the first Black mayor in St. Petersburg’s history and the election of the first Latina to the St. Petersburg City Council, Florida Democr
atic Party Chairman Manny Diaz issued the following statement congratulating them and other winners of the Nov. 2 elections:
“A big congratulation is in order to all the Democratic winners from last night’s elections, who showed there is a path for Democrats to retake the Governor’s Mansion and to unseat Sen. Marco Rubio. Floridians are aligned with Democratic values, such as freedom from Tallahassee’s strongarming of educators and local officials.
“These victories show we have a talented pool of local officials who can articulate these values and policies at the local level, values that will bring prosperity to our communities and put the state back on track after a tumultuous period where we have seen nearly 60,000 lives lost to a pandemic Ron DeSantis allowed to run amok and where we have seen Republicans attack rights such as freedom of speech and the right to vote.
“These quality elected officials can and will fight over the next year to protect these freedoms. I congratulate them once more for a job well done and look forward to working with them closely for the well-being of Floridians of all backgrounds.”
