Hi Indivisibles,

The past four years with a misogynistic and racist President have emboldened white supremacists to spew their hatred of, and commit violence against, people of color. The hate crimes committed in GA last week were yet another example of this. We must stand together against this violence and against those who want to destroy our country. 164 Republicans voted against a resolution condemning anti-Asian racism on March 17. It’s clear Republicans will continue to block laws critical to justice in America if we leave the filibuster in place.

Voting laws proposed by Republicans in 43 states would gravely restrict voting access- a slew of new legislation intended to suppress the vote and particularly to disenfranchise Black voters. Limits to early voting or absentee voting are the most common measures among this year’s proposed restrictions. Nearly 85 million voters, more than half of all Americans who voted, used one of these measures. The House has passed HR1, the For The People Act, to strengthen voting rights. We are waiting for the Senate to act on S1, their version of the bill. Republicans are expected to filibuster it, which is why it is so important that we contact Senator Feinstein and demand that she do whatever is necessary to get legislation passed and out of the Senate.

Sen. Feinstein is one of only a few Democratic holdouts who hasn’t signed on to eliminate the filibuster. But finally our calls are having an effect! On March 19th, Sen. Feinstein put out a press release saying that she is “open to changing the way the Senate filibuster rules are used.” Sadly, rather than doing what it takes to get progressive laws passed, she’s still on a futile quest for “bipartisanship” with Republican lawmakers who continually prove their allegiance to white supremacy. The type of filibuster reform she mentioned, the return to a talking filibuster, still allows endless Republican obstruction (Indivisible has an explainer here). Despite this, Sen. Feinstein says she doesn’t believe “one party should be able to prevent votes on important bills by abusing the filibuster.” We need to hold her to her word and make sure that she supports a change that actually stops Republican obstruction.

Check out our event calendar at for virtual events and actions, including Action Coffee on Mondays and the Fixing our Democracy Action Hour- now on Sundays at 5pm.

Save the date for the next virtual General Meeting: 7pm March 29th.
We plan to present amendments to the bylaws for membership approval and vote on a nominee for steering committee.  The proposed amendments will deal with the frequency of membership meetings and the number of positions on the steering committee.

Text: Fixing our democracy. Volunteers needed. Blueprint provided. Action Hours: New time! 5pm on Sundays on Zoom. Images are of the Indivisible Yolo logo and of a stylized silhouette of the Capitol building in white on a blue blueprint paper style background.

Our six week series delving into the new Indivisible Guide has concluded – but there is still plenty of fixing of our democracy left to do, so we are extending Action Hour through the rest of the first 100 days of the Biden administration. It’s still every Sunday, but now at a new (and we hope more convenient) time: 5pm. We’ll review democracy reform developments and continue to give you directions each week on an easy action to take to persuade our elected officials to enact the key democracy reforms in the new Indivisible guide.

The next Action Hour is at 5pm Sunday. Slides, action scripts, a tally sheet to track your actions, and the Zoom link can be found at:

Urge Senator Feinstein to eliminate the filibuster

Sample Call Script for Sen. FEINSTEIN:
Hello, my name is [YOUR NAME] and I’m a constituent from [CITY, zip code].
I’m calling to express joy that Senator Feinstein now is agreeing that Republicans should not be able to use the filibuster to prevent votes on important bills. I’m very glad the Senator supports defending our democracy through S1, and recognizes the House’s reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act, as well as recently passed gun control legislation. Opening to changing the filibuster is a step forward, but filibuster reform is not enough. It’s clear that Republicans still won’t work with Democrats to ensure fair elections, or pass other bills critical to justice in America. It’s time for Senator Feinstein to fully support doing whatever it takes to pass S. 1 and other critical legislation.

Republicans are pushing an avalanche of state bills attacking our freedom to vote. Senate bill S.1 – the For the People Act – would fight back against these attacks on our democracy. But there’s no doubt that Mitch McConnell will use the filibuster to kill S.1. Please tell Senator Feinstein that the time has come to pass S-1 / HR 1 now no matter what must be done to the filibuster to ensure it passes.

If you get a staffer: Please have your office get back to me on where Senator Feinstein stands on eliminating the filibuster. My phone number is [phone number] and my email address is [email].

Call on Rep. Garamendi to Accelerate DC Statehood

Sample Call Script:
Hello, my name is [YOUR NAME]. I’m a constituent from [CITY, zip code].
I’m a voter calling in support of HR-51, DC Statehood.

Please let Congressman Garamendi know how thankful I am that he’s a co-sponsor and ask that he do whatever he can to speed its review in the Armed Services committee so it can reach the floor and move to the Senate, where it must be addressed along with HR1.

I’m extremely worried about the avalanche of anti-voting bills being pushed at the state level by Republicans. Unless the Senate eliminates the filibuster, we won’t be able to defend against these attacks on our democracy. So, I also urge him to do everything he can to encourage Senator Feinstein to eliminate the filibuster so that voting rights are assured for all Americans. Thank you.
