Hi, everyone! It’s Tuesday!
Tues – 3/2: The American Rescue Plan could use a couple of extra lifeboats… (https://indivisibleventura.org/2021/03/02/tues-3-2-the-american-rescue-plan-could-use-a-a-couple-of-extra-lifeboats/)
Seriously. This time of ferocious politics has taught us more civics than we ever thought we’d need, and also that we can’t sit back and relax, just because Trump is no longer president.
We got some issues we’d like our senators to address…People are starting to get hit with tax bills for their unemployment checks, which shouldn’t be taxed at all during a time like this. Seriously! The GOP will force the Democrats to use reconciliation to get this through, and that process has some issues that the GOP are hoping will bite us in the behind. Adding automatic stabilizers will keep the Rescue plan cruising along without additional legislation if we still need help in September or beyond.
Mon 3/1/21: H.R.1/S.1 – For the People Act of 2021: The most important bill for our democracy is still the first one.
All of our democratic legislators (Reps. Brownley and Carbajal and Senators Feinstein and Padilla) are signed on to H.R.1/S.1 – “For the People Act.” Please contact them to thank them, because they’re doing the right thing. For the senators, we want you also to tell them that this is worth a targeted filibuster. We’ve truly had a lucky escape from a dangerous leader. We’ve seen how “norms” disappear when someone chooses to ignore them. If we want to continue as a democracy when someone like Trump is in power, we need this bill to pass. We’ve also included links for volunteering to phonebank or textbank for this bill with non-partisan Common Cause, as well as an opportunity to become one of their social media monitors. Indivisible has also given us a template to write letters to your local papers and to make a video to “talk” to your legislators.
Yeah, we know it’s not Friday. And we know that the parliamentarian nixed the $15 minimum wage for the American Rescue Plan Act, which means we can’t use reconciliation with a simple majority vote. Filibuster time. Why don’t they just toss her and get another one, like the GOP did 20 years ago to pass a massive tax cut? Parliamentarians serve for decades and span multiple presidencies. Elizabeth MacDonough was appointed by a Democrat in 2012. Manchin has already gone on record to refuse to vote for any bill that goes over her head, so there would be much shouting with zero results.
Moving on – The House just passed HR 5 – The Equality Act. YAY! But it will run smack into the filibuster too, unless we compromise and allow religion-based discrimination, which is why we need the Equality Act in the first place. We need to either nuke the filibuster, or convince the hold-out Dems (Manchen/Sinema/etc.) to allow targeted filibusters when the civil rights of Americans are on the line. GOP-led states are busy passing voter suppression laws, we can’t wait until there are 60 Democrat senators in the chamber to give fellow citizens basic rights.
Call your Senators. https://indivisibleventura.org/2021/02/26/friday-2-16-filibusterfriday-both-the-15-hr-wage-and-h-r-5-the-equality-act-are-in-danger-in-the-senate/

Monday – 3/1/2021 – Petition – “Demand a free and fair trial.”
Sign here. (https://www.change.org/p/tim-walz-demand-a-free-and-fair-trial) GEORGE FLOYD should still be alive today. Demand Justice.
Derek Chauvin will stand trial for the murder of George Floyd in March. The 3 other officers on the scene that day will stand trial in August. Chauvin has been charged with second-degree murder and manslaughter and faces up to 40 years in prison if convicted.
We demand a free and fair trial. We demand the Minneapolis Police Officers involved in the murder of George Floyd be held responsible.
We are calling on Governor Tim Walz, Keith Ellison, of Minnesota Attorney General and Judge Peter Cahill to ensure a fair trial.
George Floyd was a star athlete in high school, and among the first of his siblings to attend college. He became a fixture in the early days of Houston’s hip-hop scene, performing as a rapper known as “Big Floyd.” Like all of us, he had some ups and downs in his life, but in adulthood, Mr. Floyd became committed to his Christian faith, becoming an active church volunteer and a mentor to troubled youth in his community.
Thank you for reading this petition. Please sign and share to help get justice for George Floyd and to prevent more cases of police brutality. Support and Follow us on Instagram: @justiceforgeorge and Twitter: @gfmfoundation, and Facebook: The George Floyd Memorial Foundation for case updates.
