Tuesday, the majority of city leaders bypassed the choice of the public by choosing City Charter Option B to fill Billie Orr’s vacant council seat. This means that an individual will be chosen from a group of applicants and then will serve for ALMOST THREE YEARS without having been duly elected by the citizens! Jim Lamerson’s name was mentioned as a candidate for the seat. Mr. Lamerson was a voted out by the citizens in 2018. We need to respond to this bad decision and stop the appointment of any predetermined individual!
NOTE that the council also decided that “most” of the interview process of applicants would be done in public, rather than in closed-door executive session.

Keep in mind that many members of the council are pro-growth and pro-weakening the water policy. They will decide who Orr’s replacement is and stack the council in their favor. YOU WILL NOT DECIDE WHO REPRESENTS YOU!
Here are some talking points:
- Request the city council to recall their decision to allow their replacement to finish Orr’s term. Instead have the seat considered in the Nov. 2021 election.
- This is an elected position, not an appointed position.
- Request the city council refrain from making suggestions on who they want to fill the seat, and to not mention “old cronies”. Let all citizens participate in filling in applications AND have the applications available for public review..
Now is the time for you to get on the record as opposing this decision. Write a rant, Letter to the Editor, call, or email the council.

At their Voting Meeting on January 12 Prescott City Council voted to accept applications to fill the vacancy through the November 2023 Election. Applicants must have been a registered voter in the City of Prescott for at least one year prior to appointment. Applications will be reviewed in a Special Executive Session Meeting scheduled for Tuesday, February 2nd at which time Council will also determine next steps for the interview and appointment process. It is the goal of the City Council to have a candidate appointed by the Tuesday, February 23rd Voting Meeting.
Interested citizens may access the application on the city website at the following link: Prescott City Council Details or by contacting the City Clerk’s Office. The application filing deadline is 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, January 27, 2021.
