Message for Our
US Senators and Representatives
In a recent “Let’s Talk Politics with Ray” session we discussed what we would like to hear Biden say in his Inauguration Speech. One of the most agreed upon points was that we wanted a message of unity and bipartisan collaboration.
Jay Henderson, one of our members, drafted a very effective message that you may want to share with our Members of Congress. Their contacts are listed at the bottom of this message. Additionally, you may want to thank them for all they’ve done the past year and to wish them Happy Holidays. We’ll be scheduling zoom meetings with them early next year.
From JayAs part of a broad effort to ‘reach across the aisle’ and persuade Republicans who voted for Trump because they ‘always vote Republican’, they should note that Abraham Lincoln was the first Republican president. His staunch opposition to slavery is in stark contrast to the racially biased policies, beliefs and actions of the Republican Party of 2020.
One hundred years after Lincoln, Republican President Dwight D Eisenhower presided over eight years of support for a progressive tax rate that stands in complete contrast to the ‘trickle-down’, pro-rich and anti-poor tax rates of today.
Other Republican presidents, from Reagan to the two Bush presidents (including George W Bush who will almost certainly be on the scene if not on the dias when Biden is sworn in), were honest gentlemen with great empathy for all Americans regardless of skin color or economic class.
Democrats and Republicans have never agreed on all things but time and again they have demonstrated that compromise and bipartisanship are keys to our country’s success. We have somehow lost sight of this in recent years.
As the Biden administration begins to rebuild America, it calls on all Republicans to join hands with Democrats in rekindling the same spirit of compromise and bipartisanship by looking for role models among the likes of Abraham Lincoln, Dwight Eisenhower and other great presidents who were Republicans in name but Americans in action.
