- Trump’s failure to prepare for and respond to the pandemic has had a devastating impact on Ohio’s economy. More than 1.5 million Ohioans have filed for unemployment since the start of the pandemic.
- Approximately 432,000 Ohioans were unable to pay rent on time this summer, while more than 600,000 Ohioans say a child in their household didn’t have enough to eat because they couldn’t afford it.
- But instead of taking action to keep families afloat, Trump slashed enhanced unemployment benefits in half for tens of millions of Americans and zeroed out benefits for more than a million low-wage workers.
Even Before The Pandemic, Trump Broke His Promise To “Fill Up Those Factories” And Keep Ohioans On The Job.
- Speaking in Youngstown in 2017, Trump told working families, “Don’t sell your house. […] We’re going to get those values up. We’re going to get those jobs coming back, and we’re going to fill up those factories or rip them down and build brand new ones.”
- Instead, General Motors closed its Lordstown plant and laid off 5,400 Ohioans. Rather than take action to help, Trump deflected blame onto laid-off Ohioans.
- That trend continued across the state well before the coronavirus pandemic. Last year was Ohio’s worst year for job creation since the height of the Great Recession, costing 12,500 jobs — including 6,000 jobs in manufacturing.

- Trump’s call for a Goodyear boycott undermined thousands of Ohioans’ livelihoods, drawing widespread criticism — and no defense from Ohio Republicans.
- Trump dismissed Goodyear workers’ outrage, saying they “will be able to get another good job.”
Trump Broke His Promise To “Take Care Of Our Farmers.”
- Speaking in Columbus in 2018, Trump promised, “We’re going to take care of our farmers. Our farmers are great American patriots.”
- In reality, Ohio farmers have been paying the price for Trump’s disastrous trade war. Last year, Ohio farm bankruptcies reached a decade-long high. Even now, Trump is leaving small farmers out of coronavirus relief funding.
