Election Summer Palooza, brought to you by Indivisible East Bay & Flip the West.

Indivisible East Bay

Are we having difficult discussions yet? If not, maybe we need to talk with some new people, or participate in some online discussions — or listen to some speakers, without talking — or read some books, a bit further outside our comfort zone. Or maybe we need to learn and not talk for a while in the non-comfort zone. Yeah, we thought wearing masks and staying six feet apart was uncomfortable. Turns out we were wrong; and if we’ve had it relatively easy so far we’re not going to make things better without being willing to let things get personally harder first. We don’t pretend to have answers. Just a few things to help — or make things more difficult — along the way.

Action: The Police – We’ll be Watching Them

Deadline: NOW – We assume you, like us, want to force change on police departments and police unions that have been responsible for anti-Black bias and violence — and to prevent more from happening in the future. Our article details some of the many local, state, and national efforts to reduce police use of force, increase the ability to investigate law enforcement, and reform police departments with training and accountability. These policy solutions aren’t the only path to change, but they’re things we can tell you about right now — please do them, and tell your friends!

We Could Not Make This Up

We’re in the Upside Down when the Army publicly spats with the Legend-in-his-own-Mind-in-Chief. Today, the Chair of the Joint Chiefs of Staff apologized for appearing in Trump’s Walk of Shame to St. John’s Church after protesters were tear gassed and shot with rubber bullets just for his photo op. This after the Pentagon said they’d think about taking Confederate names off bases but got shot down (sorry not sorry). “History of Winning”! “Hallowed Grounds”! “Magnificent and Fabled Military Installations”! — you know who tweeted about never changing the bases named after the Magnificent and Fabled Pro-Slavery Warriors? And speaking of Confederate Lives Matter, guess who’s re-starting his campaign rallies on Juneteenth in Tulsa, Oklahoma, home of the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre — “the single worst incident of racial violence in American history”? But it’s cool, his campaign advisor says, cuz “Republicans are proud of the history of Juneteenth.” As long as it stays ancient history, amirite?
