What’s the difference between Poll Worker & Poll Watcher?

Poll Worker:
Nonpartisan, Paid (Clerks, Judges, Inspectors, Checker, Precinct Worker)

Poll Watcher:
Partisan, Volunteer (Observers, Monitors, Challengers)

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

To be a poll worker (Election Commissioner) You must be 18+, registered to vote in New Mexico, be a resident of the precinct 1 year+, complete training. Messengers & translators may also be appointed. $140+ To sign up contact your County Clerk. 

HOW POLL WORKERS ARE CHOSEN:

The county clerk, on or before 55 days next preceding the primary election appoints precinct boards in the following order: from the list submitted by major party county chairmen, from standby list compiled by county clerk. 

NOTE: New Mexico is one of a few states that explicitly includes academic observers in its election law and permits nonpartisan observation at all stages of the election & differentiates between “election observers” and “poll watchers or challengers.”

POLL WATCHER INFO:

The county chair of each political party represented on the ballot may appoint in writing challengers for each polling location. (N.M. Stat. Ann. § 1-2-21). An election-related organization may appoint watchers in a county if the organization provides a written notice to the secretary of state at least ten days prior to the election date and specifies the names of the qualified appointees. Any group of three candidates for elected office may appoint watchers in a county. The secretary of state shall notify the county clerk of the qualified appointees at least five days before the election. 

Challengers and watchers shall be voters of a precinct located in that county to which they are appointed.

Who is Authorized to Challenge a Voter’s Eligibility on Election Day?

A challenge may be interposed by a member of the precinct board or by a party challenger.
