What’s the difference between Poll Worker & Poll Watcher?

Poll Worker:
Nonpartisan, Paid (Clerks, Judges, Inspectors, Checker, Precinct Worker)

Poll Watcher:
Partisan, Volunteer (Observers, Monitors, Challengers)

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

To be a poll worker (Moderator, Ward Clerk, Selectmen) You must be 18+, registered to vote in New Hampshire, Political affiliation required, a resident of the voting district, complete required training. $100. To signup, contact your county clerk. 

WHAT POLL WORKERS DO: 

Moderator – Elected for 2-year term in odd-numbered years. Moderator is the chief election officer in charge of the polls at the ward level. Ward Clerk – Elected for 2-year term in odd-numbered years. Ward clerk reports to moderator. Primary duty is to administer & prepare the documentation required at polling place. Ward Selectmen – Elected for 2-year term in odd-numbered years. Primary duty is to aid the voters in the election process. 3 per ward. Ward Ballot Inspectors – 2 of each party which cast largest number of votes in last general election.

HOW POLL WORKERS ARE CHOSEN:

Appointments b/t Sep 15 & Oct 15 of even-numbered year by ward political committee. Assistant Election Officials – Moderator is also authorized to appoint “such other election officials as he or she deems necessary…”

POLL WATCHER INFO:

The state committee of a political party may appoint a person to act as challenger of voters at any polling place in the state at a state election. (N.H. Rev. Stat. Ann. § 666.4). The attorney general may appoint a person to act as challenger of voters at any polling place in the state at a state election.

Who is Authorized to Challenge a Voter’s Eligibility on Election Day?

A voter offering to vote at any state election may be challenged by any other voter registered in the town or ward in which the election is held, an election official, a challenger appointed by a political committee pursuant to RSA 666:4, or a challenger appointed by the attorney general
