Overview of Strategy
Down the homestretch in 2020, it makes sense to focus efforts where they will have the biggest impact. DemCast is preparing to do just that: we are building digital teams in the 14 most critical 2020 states to help flip seats and legislatures up and down ballot.
Our Focus14 States are: Arizona, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Iowa, Kansas, Maine, Michigan, Montana, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Texas & Wisconsin.
These states were chosen via an analysis of tipping points for state legislature, US House, US Senate & Presidential races. We have developed a target list of races by state that are most likely to flip and that can make the biggest impact for progres in the state and nation.
For each of these states, DemCast will focus on conducting outreach to grassroots groups doing work on the ground. We will network with new and existing partners to recruit and develop a strong base of digital volunteers who can produce digital media and provide social media amplification through November 2020 (and beyond). Our goal is to recruit 20,000 volunteers in these target states by October.
Focus14 will also offer the opportunity for volunteers from other states to “adopt” and commit to supporting a single swing state for the remainder of the cycle. This way, someone from Wyoming or New York can dive deep into a single sister state and really affect change.
Focus14 is intentionally a “whole state” strategy. There are idiosyncrasies to each state: voter registration requirements, ballot deadlines, social & economic issues, voter suppression tactics, etc. Asking out-of-state activists to commit to digital and virtual activism in a single state makes sense – they can gain expertise in the issues and grassroots organizations within a single state. This will make them more attuned to the effective messaging required to win hearts and minds of target voters within the state.
