Bernie’s defeat in the 2020 Democratic Party primaries has left millions of us wondering what to do next. Is it even possible to take over the Democratic Party? If we get close, would they just change the rules on us and force us out anyway? Do working people need their own party? What would that new party have to look like–what would make it different from the Democrats or the Greens? On the other hand, we’ve seen some successes running candidates on the Democratic Party ballot line. Is there a way to get to this new party without giving up the utility of the Democratic Party ballot line when we need it? Or should we have a “clean break,” and stop running as Democrats altogether?
Join Phoenix DSA for a special edition of the Socialist Night School, where we will debate the path forward. This event will have guest speakers representing different positions, followed by general discussion. We recommend some readings which help articulate these positions.
Brianna Westbrook, vice-chair and executive committee member of the Arizona Democratic Party, will speak in favor of staying the course and continuing to run within the Democratic Party. For this perspective, we also recommend this article by Dustin
The “Clean Break” strategy will be represented by K Kahn, Marxist organizer, activist, and author of this article: https://socialistrevolution.org/bernie-sanders-and-the-lessons-of-the-dirty-break-why-socialists-shouldnt-run-as-democrats/
The “conscious dirty break” strategy will be represented by Philip Locker, political director of Kshama Sawant’s successful independent campaigns for Seattle City Council in 2013 and 2015, who co-authored this article: https://reformandrevolution.org/articles/after-bernie-its-time-to-start-talking-about-a-democratic-socialist-party/
Please invite anyone you know who might be interested, and join DSA (dsausa.org/join) in preparation for the work ahead! Non-members are more than welcome to attend!
