Commemorating the Civil Rights Act / Last-Minute Tips and Reminders for Oakland County Voters

Dear friends,

As we commemorate the 60th anniversary of the signing of the Civil Rights Act by President Lyndon B. Johnson, we are reminded of the monumental strides our nation has taken toward equality and justice for all. This landmark legislation was a turning point in American history, outlawing discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, or national origin and laying the foundation for the progress we continue to fight for today.

The Civil Rights Act of 1964 was not just a piece of legislation; it was a declaration of our collective commitment to uphold the principles of justice, equality, and human dignity. It was a recognition that every person deserves to be treated with respect and afforded the same opportunities, regardless of their background. The courage and dedication of countless individuals who championed this cause have paved the way for the freedoms and rights we cherish now. As we reflect on the progress made since that historic day, we must also acknowledge the work that remains.

The struggle for civil rights and social justice is ongoing, and it is our duty to carry the torch forward. We must continue to advocate for policies that promote equality, protect the vulnerable, and ensure that the voices of all Americans are heard and respected. Let us honor the legacy of the Civil Rights Act by recommitting ourselves to these principles. Together, we can build a society where every individual is valued, every community is strong, and every person has the opportunity to thrive.

Thank you for your continued dedication to these ideals.

Expect and Respect Safety Protocols: If there are health and safety measures in place, please follow them to protect yourself and others.

Plan for Weather and Wait Times: Check the weather forecast and prepare for potential lines. Consider bringing water, snacks, and necessary medications if you anticipate a wait.

Last Chance for Absentee Voting: If you have an absentee ballot, ensure it is submitted by the deadline. Details are available at the Michigan Voter Information Center.

Every vote counts, and your participation is crucial in shaping the future of our community and beyond. Let’s make sure that everyone’s voice is heard this August 6th!

What to Bring:

Identification: You will need to present an acceptable form of photo ID at the polls. This can be your Michigan driver’s license, state-issued ID card, military ID, or passport. If you do not have a photo ID, you can still vote by signing an affidavit confirming your identity.

Proof of Registration (optional but recommended): While not required, having your voter registration card or proof of registration can speed up the process at your polling place.

Mask and Sanitizer: Given ongoing health and safety considerations, we recommend bringing a mask and hand sanitizer for your protection and the safety of others.

What to Expect at the Polls:

Polling Place Procedures: Upon arrival, you will check in, present your ID, and receive your ballot. Poll workers will be available to assist you with any questions or issues you may encounter.

Safety Measures: Safety protocols will be in place to ensure a safe environment for all voters. Please follow any posted signs and instructions from poll workers.

Waiting Times: Depending on the turnout, there may be waiting times. Consider voting during off-peak hours, such as mid-morning or early afternoon, to avoid longer lines.

Accessibility: If you require assistance due to mobility issues or other disabilities, assistance will be available. Every polling place is equipped to accommodate voters with special needs.

We are committed to making sure your voting experience is as smooth and positive as possible. Remember, your vote is your voice—make it count!
