Reasons to VOTE, from the perspective of a 2nd grader

Earlier this year, the PEG newsletter team asked our honorary member, Zaria, if she would write her thoughts and submit them to the PEG newsletter. She accepted the request and wrote her thoughts to questions that she asked:

  1. What does voting mean? and
  2. Why is voting important?

Below are her responses, with a couple of gentle edits.

  1. To have RIGHTS and have a VOTE means to have something you would agree on that is FAIR
  2. Because when way before I was born there was the civil rights war, and a lot of people got SHOT – LIKE 3,4444 people – and I don’t want that to happen again

She finished her first published piece with an offer to write more “so, if you have anymore Questions I will Answer them soon enough. Thank you – Zaria, who is Leslie McGraw’s daughter.”

VOTE May 7: Special Election in Ypsilanti

A special vote will be held to consider the recall of Ward 3 Ypsilanti City Council Member Desirae Simmons. No specific grounds are required for recall in Michigan. To get a recall on the ballot in Michigan, recall supporters must collect signatures equal in number to 25% of voters in the jurisdiction that voted in the most recent gubernatorial race. That number was 603 and recall supporters gathered 606 signatures.

Democrats Regain Control of Michigan State House in Special Elections – Protectors of Equality in Government

Two seats in the Michigan House have been empty since late November 2023, when representatives from Westland and Warren stepped down to become mayors of their respective hometowns. Their departures from the Michigan Legislature left Democrats without a majority in the House, with each party holding 54 seats.
