SUNDAY’S CIVIL BEAT ARTICLE
On March 14 the House Committee on Judiciary and Hawaiian Affairs voted down SB2381 which would have made possible public financing of candidates in state and county elections.
A recent poll shows that 78% of Hawaii voters believe that legislators are beholden to their donors and this influences their votes. 66% believe elected officials care more about “wealthy donors” than the “needs of their communities”. 71% support a “Clean Elections” publicly-funded elections program as a way to overcome the influence of big money in elections. [SurveyUSA, Feb. 27-March 6, 2024]. The Legislature needs to listen to its constituents.
1. CALL/E-MAIL House Judiciary Chair David Tarnas and EVERY member of the House Judiciary Committee prior to Wednesday, March 20th. Tell them to bring back SB2381 to address whatever issues exist and PASS IT.
