TO KEEP CLEAN ELECTIONS ALIVE

On March 14 the House Committee on Judiciary and Hawaiian Affairs voted down SB2381 which would have made possible public financing of candidates in state and county elections.

A recent poll shows that 78% of Hawai’i voters believe that legislators are beholden to their donors and this influences their votes.  66% believe elected officials care more about “wealthy donors” than the “needs of their communities”.  71% support a “Clean Elections” publicly-funded elections program as a way to overcome the influence of big money in elections. [SurveyUSA, Feb. 27-March 6, 2024]

The Legislature once again has no intention of changing.  The bill does not force anyone to do anything, it provides a path for those who are not wired into big campaign financing.  But to take effect, it has to pass a Legislature full of chickens who cannot stand the thought of competition on a level playing field.

THE TIME FOR PATIENCE IS OVER.

WE ARE WATCHING, WE ARE ANGRY, AND WE EXPECT MORE

URGENT CALL TO ACTION – TUESDAY MARCH 19 10:10 AM

WE NEED YOUR HELP to keep same sex marriage legal.   Hawaii’s Constitution, in Article I Sec. 23, still reads: “The legislature shall have the power to reserve marriage to opposite-sex couples.”   House Bill HB2802 proposes an amendment to delete this language.   HB2802 passed the State House and was transmitted to the State Senate.  A hearing is now set before the Senate Committee on Judiciary on March 19, 2024 at 10:10 AM.

PLEASE SUBMIT TESTIMONY IN SUPPORT OF THIS BILL !   Simply click on this link to the State Legislature’s webpage to do so:

 Measure Status (hawaii.gov)

Your testimony must be submitted before 10:10 AM on March 18th.   A simple “I support this bill” will help so much.

Same sex marriage has been legal for years.  We now have family members, friends, neighbors, and co-workers in same sex marriages. The language in Sec. 23 has no place in our state constitution.  Please help us get it removed.  Mahalo!
