Raising the Alarm on Nuclear Threats at the Academy Awards
Since 2022, TaskForce has been working with the Nuclear Threat Initiative to create GIFs, memes, and installations tackling denuclearization and the modern arms race.
At the Academy Awards on Sunday, Best Actor winner Cillian Murphy and director Christopher Nolan reminded the audience of the rising nuclear threat. These Oscars speeches come as part of TaskForce’s recent collaboration with the Nuclear Threat Initiative, the “For Your Consideration: #MakeNukesHistory” campaign emphasizing that Oppenheimer is history, but nuclear weapons are not.
After all, Oppenheimer’s big wins this past weekend come at a dangerous time. The United States is currently embattled in an arms race with Russia and China, as the war in Ukraine continues to escalate the nuclear risks.
The #MakeNukesHistory campaign includes billboards across Los Angeles, a large-scale mural unveiling, an original art installation at the Grove, and over 1,000 posters across the city juxtaposing Oppenheimer’s 13 Oscar nominations and the world’s 13,000 nuclear weapons.
