Florida Democrats Celebrate Black History Month on Statewide Tour

For the past month, Florida Democratic Party Chair Nikki Fried has visited historically Black communities to celebrate Black History Month, stopping in six counties across the state to listen to Black stories, learn Black history and mobilize Black voters.

The tour kicked off in South Florida with a roundtable and Karaoke in the Gardens, bringing over 1,000 folks out to sing and celebrate Black culture. Chair Fried also sat down with Marckerson Jeanty for a special interview on the importance of Haitian Floridians to our mission to take back our state in 2024.

On week two, Florida Democrats hit the road in Orange County meeting with over 100 Black seniors for a luncheon with the Apopka Seniors Progressive Club and engaged with community leaders at the grand opening of a new local organization.

The tour later stopped in Seminole and Brevard counties on week three, beginning with a visit to historic Sanford – a place with a long history of racial injustice followed by a stop in Melbourne, where Harry T. and Harriette Moore, a Florida couple active in the civil rights movement who were killed by Ku Klux Klan members in 1951. Together, they registered more than 116,000 Democrats, making Florida the state with the highest number of registered Black voters, far more than any other Southern state at the time.

The last stop of the tour culminated in a speech from Chair Fried at the Duval Dems Singleton Hazouri Gala event on the eve of her first anniversary as Chair and a celebratory event in Tampa. It was a fitting conclusion to the statewide swing across the state, as Tampa has historically served as a hub for the civil rights leaders in Florida and continues to be a beacon for Black culture today.

The Florida Democratic Party invested in Black media, placing the following ads in various outlets highlighting Black leaders past and present to celebrate Black History Month:
