- EXPAND THE CHILD TAX CREDITAccording to the Coalition on Human Needs (see “Take Action” on their website), a new tax proposal would improve the Child Tax Credit for some 80% of low-income families and lift 400,000 children above the poverty line. For a 2-child family earning $15,000 a year, the proposal would increase the Child Tax Credit from $1,875 to $3,600 for 2023. Let’s tell our U.S. Representative to co-sponsor The Tax Relief for American Families and Workers Act of 2024, H.R.7024, and tell our U.S. Senator to reach out to Senator Ron Wyden to co-sponsor equivalent legislation in the Senate. Alternatively, we can send letters through the Coalition on Human Needs or through Jewish Women International.
- HOW TO BECOME AN ELECTION WORKERA reader asked how people can become election workers. These positions are also called poll workers and are an essential piece of the election process. While specific duties and compensation vary depending on location, poll workers are the face of the election office during voting. Most jurisdictions task election workers with setting up and preparing the polling location, welcoming voters, verifying voter registrations, and issuing ballots. Poll workers also help ensure voters understand the voting process by demonstrating how to use voting equipment and explaining voting procedures. Poll workers are especially needed for this election year. Requirements to become an election worker vary by state. It focuses primarily on far right candidates who are predicted to be in close races in November. Let’s check out this new resource and see how we can help.
- HELP STOP VOTER SUPPRESSION TACTICSThe night before the New Hampshire Presidential primary, Democrats in the state received robocalls in an imitation of Biden’s voice telling them “It’s important that you save your vote for the November election….voting this Tuesday only enables the Republicans in their quest to elect Donald Trump again.” Biden didn’t appear on the New Hampshire ballot, but a strong write-in campaign for Biden had been underway. We’ll likely see more voter suppression efforts like this as we move toward November’s Presidential election. The New Hampshire Attorney General has announced an investigation regarding these calls. Let’s ask the Department of Justice to do the same. Election security is a nation-wide concern.
