Those of us who still believe in democracy and personal rights for everyone understand how close we came to losing our rights and freedoms in 2020. 81.2 million citizens voted in the 2020 presidential election, during a pandemic, denying Donald Trump a second term. Had he won, he would have declared himself Ruler for Life, otherwise known as a dictator.
Even with that 2020 victory over autocracy, 74.2 million Americans voted for him. Apparently, they wanted more of his atrocities against humanity, embrace of authoritarians such as Putin and Kim Jong Un, and disrespect for our allies and troops. The possibility of his re-election should terrify us all!
Over the past 100+ years, dictators have used their authoritarian tactics to seize power by provoking people to focus their anger on the “other” as perceived enemies.
Trump started his first campaign by calling Mexicans rapists, murderers, and drug traffickers. Later, he turned the rage of his angry cult followers on the LGBTQ+ community, Asian, Black, and Jewish people, same-sex couples, teachers and librarians, and even on transgender children.
In 2018, Trump canceled his planned visit to pay respects at an American military cemetery outside Paris, he said, because dead soldiers were “losers” and “suckers” and he did not want the rain to mess up his hair.

- Reign Through Terror – Trump stopped all air travel from Muslim countries, separated 5,600 children from their families seeking asylum at the border and didn’t track where they went, had the military tear-gas peaceful BLM protesters, and infamously held a Bible upside down during a press event while pretending to be respectful of the religious community.
- Control the Truth – Trump called all mainstream media “the enemy of the people” and ”fake news”. He disputed proven COVID and climate change science.
- Control What People See, Hear and Read – Trump told his cult: “What you’re seeing and what you’re reading is not what’s happening. Only believe what I tell you!” He tried to co-opt FOX News, OAN and others to broadcast only what he wanted people to believe.
- Attack the Government You Were Elected to Lead – Trump fired numerous FBI and CIA professionals, and members of his own cabinet for supposed “disloyalty” and replaced them with yes-people and other sycophants.
- Rule Forever and Stay in Power at All Costs – Trump said to the January 6th insurrectionists, “And after this, we’re going to walk down, and I’ll be there with you, we’re going to walk down. Because you’ll never take back our country with weakness. You have to show strength and you have to be strong. We have come to demand that Congress do the right thing and only count the electors who have been lawfully slated,” in referring to the fake electors.
- Create a New Society – Trump tries to convince his cult followers that this country should be ruled as a White Christian Nationalist country. In Charlottesville, VA, he said “…I’m sure there were very fine people…on both sides!” Trump called the recent SCOTUS decision destroying decades of reproductive freedoms of Roe v. Wade, “the biggest WIN for LIFE in a generation”, and then gave himself credit for the outcome.
A dictator’s leadership style focuses on retaining power and control and not on expanding opportunities for citizens. Dictatorial leaders demand unswerving loyalty and compliance to their dictates.
