Senator Margie Bright Matthews Wins JFK Profile in Courage Award!

There aren’t many counties in the country who can celebrate their State Senator winning one of the nation’s most prestigious awards for political courage, but most counties don’t have Senator Margie Bright Matthews as their Senator.

We could not be more proud of our own local Democratic State Senator receiving the John F. Kennedy Profile In Courage Award for her courageous stand against the Republican efforts to end Reproductive Freedom in South Carolina.  Senator Bright Matthews received the award along with her four fellow “Sister Senators” and we are grateful for her continued principled service to our party, our county, and our state.

Republican Legislators back Book Bans and School Board Chaos

The chaos on the Charleston County School Board has been an embarrassment to our county and a danger to the education of our children.  Ever since the extreme right-wing group, “Moms for Liberty” won a 5-4 majority on the board last year, there have been attempts at censorship and targeting of educators that should be chilling to anyone concerned about public education in our democracy.

It’s so clear that “Moms for Liberty” is an extreme conservative organization that even other Republicans and non-partisan office holders have publicly condemned the turmoil they’ve created in our schools.

Sadly, this week, three of our most extreme Republican State Legislators (Rep. Matt Leber, Rep. Kathy Landing, and Rep. Jordan Pace) endorsed this extremism and chaos in our schools.

Charleston Democrats stand in strong opposition to any legislators supporting this group and we look forward to running strong candidates against them in 2024.  We also once again want to recognize the brave and principled school board members standing up to the extreme conservative majority and fighting for honest and high-quality public education in Charleston County: Courtney WatersDaron Lee CalhounDarlene Dunmeyer-Roberson, and Carol Tempel
