Mass Shooting on Isle of Palms
This month we are again mourning multiple mass shootings around the country, including right here in our own community at the Isle of Palms. There are dozens more families whose lives have been forever altered by gun violence and we owe it to them to take action in their honor.
Charleston not only needs leaders who will enact common-sense reforms to reduce gun violence, it needs leaders who understand the problem and want to use their power to address it.
What do SC Republicans Say About Gun Violence?
South Carolina Republicans continue a complete unwillingness to lead on gun safety:
- Representative Nancy Mace (R-SC01), who has an “A” rating from the NRA and repeatedly features herself with these guns as a selling point in her campaign ads, continues to be part of the problem by perpetuating a false equivalency between the Republicans total refusal to act and Democrats desire for popular common ground solutions to reduce gun violence.
- Republican Governor Henry McMaster travelled to IOP on April 11 for a press conference and asked the SC legislature to pass a bail reform bill. There is no evidence that tightening bail would have done anything to prevent the IOP shooting, as neither shooter was out on bail. There is evidence that shows states with more gun safety laws have less gun violence.
- In February Republicans in the SC State House passed H 3594 (an Open Carry bill), which is recklessly allows all citizens to carry firearms in public without a permit or training. This bill will put more guns on our streets, which is directly and conclusively linked with increased rates of more gun deaths. It is waiting to be voted on in the SC Senate.

What are Gun Safety Solutions from Democrats?
- Democrats in the SC Senate have proposed a “Red Flag” law (S 0005), which would allow law enforcement to confiscate a person’s guns if that person is deemed to be a danger to their self or others.
- Another common-sense bill in the SC House, H 3011, would expand background checks for gun purchases.
- Additionally, Democrats in the SC House have introduced a bill, H 3013, to prohibit assault weapons in public spaces.
The Charleston County Democratic Party is working hard to advance serious Democratic solutions for gun violence. However, we need your help. Please invest in us, or volunteer with us, so that we can elect Democrats who will prioritize our families and advance gun safety South Carolina.

| SAT APR 29 9 AM | SCDP State Convention The South Carolina Democratic Party’s State Convention will be held in Columbia on Saturday, April 29th at the State Fairgrounds. Delegates from each county in the state will meet to organize and elect SCDP officers, and must be able to get to the convention early enough on Saturday morning to register (before 8:30) and stay until all voting is complete. Any Democrat is also welcome to attend the SCDP State Convention as a non-voting citizen. The State Convention has several festivities surrounding it: many people go early on Friday to attend the Blue Palmetto Dinner and/or Congressman Clyburn’s Fish Fry. There is no fee to attend the Convention, but delegates and visitors are responsible for their own food and travel expenses.
