- URGE DHS SECRETARY MAYORKAS TO CLOSE TORRANCE DETENTION CENTER
Over a year ago, a DHS inspection unearthed “inhumane and unsanitary conditions” at an ICE detention facility in Torrance, New Mexico. Since then, there have been two suicides and instances of violent retaliation by staff when inmates staged a hunger strike to protest the conditions. The ACLU along with many other immigration advocacy groups, have repeatedly called for the detention center to be shut down, but DHS has done nothing. Let’s use this easy action tool to email Secretary Mayorkas and repeat our call for this corrupt facility’s closure. - KEEP OUR PROMISES TO AFGHAN REFUGEES
78,000 Afghans who worked alongside US forces during the war and were successfully evacuated in the wake of the Taliban takeover are facing the loss of their legal rights to remain in this country in September. The bipartisan Afghan Adjustment Act, which would provide them all with a clear pathway to permanent residency, stalled in Congress last year. Let’s stand by the people who stood by us and tell our members of Congress to make passing S.4787 this legislation a priority before it’s too late. - SUPPORT NEW PRO-LGBTQ LEGISLATIVE PAC
Senator Machaela Cavanaugh, who has heroically ground the Nebraska state senate to a halt with her filibuster of a bill to ban gender-affirming health care, has launched a new political action committee to elect pro-LBTQ quality candidates to state legislatures. This comes in a year when almost 450 bills targeting LGBTQ rights have been filed in 44 states, and an alarming number of anti-trans bills have already become law. Let’s sign up for updates from this organization so we can support their efforts in the future.
- ASK DEM GOVERNORS TO ISSUE EXECUTIVE ORDERS PRESERVING MIFEPRISTONE ACCESS
Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey has taken decisive action to ensure access to the abortion medication mifepristone in her state. First, she got U Mass to buy a year’s worth of mifepristone—15,000 doses—and is getting other health care providers to order more. Her Executive Order confirms that mifepristone is protected by a state law that was passed in the wake of Dobbs, as are the providers and patients who use it, and instructs state agencies to issue guidance to help implement the order and support to public universities with their medication abortion readiness plans. If we have a Democratic Governor, let’s ask them to stockpile mifepristone and issue a similar Executive Order protecting medication abortion in our states.
- SPEAK OUT AGAINST TEXAS GOVERNOR’S INTENT TO PARDON THE MURDERER OF A BLACK LIVES MATTER PROTESTER
The Republican party claims to be for law and order, except when they support Kyle Rittenhouse, the January 6th insurrectionists, and now Daniel Perry, an Uber Driver convicted in a jury trial of murdering a protester in a Black Lives Matter demonstration. Let’s contact Governor Abbott’s office and tell him we object to his blatant playing of politics and going against the justice system, and let’s tell the Texas Board of Pardons that Daniel Perry is not entitled to special treatment.
STATE-SPECIFIC ACTIONS
- AZ/NV/VA: PUSH YOUR LEGISLATORS TO COMMIT TO “RIGHT TO WORK” REPEAL
Last month, Michigan became the first state in decades to repeal a “right to work” law. These laws allow those in union workplaces to free ride, opting out of paying union dues and fees while still benefiting from the union’s work. Union organizers often call them “right to work for less” laws, and research has tied them to lower wages along with declines in union membership. Arizona, Nevada and Virginia are all “right to work” states in which we are in striking distance of Democratic trifectas. If we’re in these states, let’s contact our Democratic legislators and governors and ask them to commit to making a right-to-work repeal a priority the next time those trifectas come into effect, and let’s be sure to ask future legislative and gubernatorial candidates to make the same pledge.
