EXPAND SOCIAL SECURITY
Senators Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren have introduced a bill that would both increase Social Security payments and ensure the full funding of the program through at least 2096. The Social Security Expansion Act would accomplish these ends by lifting the cap on the maximum amount of income subject to the Social Security payroll tax and expanding it to tax investment income above $200,000, moves which would only impact the wealthiest Americans. Reps. Jan Schakowsky (D-Ill.) and Val Hoyle (D-Ore.) have brought the bill to the House; Senators Whitehouse, Merkley, Van Hollen, Padilla, Gillibrand, Booker, Smith, and Markey have already signed on. We should urge our representatives in both houses to back this crucial legislation to signal we want to strengthen Social Security instead of seeing it used as a pawn in the debt ceiling game.
- STOP ONLINE AMMUNITION SALESThe Stop Ammunition Sales Act would “require federally licensed ammunition dealers to confirm the identity of individuals who arrange to purchase ammunition over the internet by verifying a photo ID in person. The bill would also require ammunition vendors to report any sales of more than 1,000 rounds within five consecutive days to the US Attorney General, if the person purchasing ammunition is not a licensed dealer.” Let’s tell our Members of Congress to co-sponsor H.R.584, the Stop Online Ammunition Sales Act of 2023.
- BAN QUALIFIED IMMUNITY FOR VIOLENT POLICE
For decades, American police officers have enjoyed broad protection from being held liable in federal civil rights lawsuits due to the doctrine of qualified immunity. This has limited our power as citizens to hold them accountable for their misdeeds, and limiting its reach has been a longstanding goal of the movement against police violence and a sticking point in negotiations over the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act. Let’s contact our members of Congress to call for action on banning qualified immunity, and then use this tool from Americans Against Qualified Immunity to encourage our state legislators to act as well. - DAY OF ACTION AGAINST FUNDING FOSSIL FUELS MARCH 21
Climate change activists have been increasing pressure on the financial sector to do their part and stop funding fossil fuel projects. They earned a significant victory in December, with HSBC announcing it will not invest in new oil and gas fields, and are looking to keep up the pressure. Third Act is leading a national day of action on March 21st to stop dirty banks. Let’s see if we can join an action near us, and follow along with Third Act, Stop The Money Pipeline and activists like Bill McKibben to get engaged with future efforts.
- SUPPORT UNIONS AT TESLA
On Tuesday, workers at a Tesla factory in Buffalo began a campaign to form a union, which if successful would be the first at the company. This would be a breakthrough that could secure better time and sick pay.
