WCDP News: Special Election Edition

Special Election Edition

What does Washtenaw’s primary reveal?

The primaries offer a glimpse into what our fellow citizens are thinking and feeling about our county, state, and nation. During yesterday’s primary here in Washtenaw County, a total of 87,525 ballots were cast – 27.75% of registered voters.
WashCo might be solidly “blue,” but our voting record needs work.

A special message WCDP Chair Chris Savage:

There are spicy primary races every cycle but, in 2022, things were a bit spicier than usual due to redistricting. But that’s a GOOD thing!

Now that the dust has settled and the voters have spoken, it’s time for us to join hands and double down on getting our voters to the polls in November. We know that we can do this because we share a unifying vision of what it means to be a Democrat and what we stand for as Democrats. In that spirit, we will be having a Unity Picnic at Island Park the evening of Tuesday, August 16th. Watch this space for details.

And now, take the next step: See the article on volunteering below to learn how you can help Get Out The Vote!

Chelsea, Dexter, Lincoln, and Saline School Board Candidates Forum

Monday, August 8 @ 7:00 pm – 8:30 pm

The Washtenaw County Democrats and Ann Arbor Democratic Party will host a forum for candidates for the Chelsea, Dexter, Lincoln, and Saline school boards on Monday, August 8, from 7:00 pm to 8:30 pm via Zoom.

School board members have a say in virtually every aspect of school district functioning. They choose superintendents. They set budgets. They decide whether new schools need to be built and old schools updated. They make or influence policy on everything from book banning to student privacy to school closures for health reasons.

We have extended invitations to all candidates. We have received confirmations of attendance from:

Lincoln: Matthew Bentley, Jason Moore
Moderator: Susan Baskett, Vice Chair, Ann Arbor Dems Programs Committee; Trustee, Ann Arbor School Board

Saline: Lauren Gold, Michael McVey
Chelsea: Glenn Fox, Kate Henson
Dexter: Daniel Alabre
Moderator: Jennifer Fairfield, Chair, Western Washtenaw Democratic Club

Attendees will be able to ask questions of the candidates. Questions may also be sent in advance to Eli Nathans, at enathans48103@gmail.com. Please state which panel your question is for.

The WCDP will hold an Endorsement Meeting on Monday, August 15th at 6:00 p.m. This is when we choose the candidates to endorse for the November 2022 General Election.

Pre-registration is required (see below) and will close at 5:30 p.m. on the day of the meeting.

In order to participate, you must have been a member of the Michigan Democratic Party for at least 30 days (by no later than July 16th). This 30-day requirement is waived for Precinct Delegates and Democratic elected officials but they must become a member no later than 5:30 p.m. on August 15th and send proof of their membership by forwarding their email receipt to info@washtenawdems.org.

When you pre-register, we will check your eligibility before sending the meeting link. Help us all and pre-register early (not on the last day!) to avoid delaying things on August 15th.

Candidates seeking our endorsement should email info@washtenawdems.org no later than Friday, August 12th. You must be a member of the MDP. Candidates will be given two minutes to address the members before each vote (via Zoom poll). More on our endorsement requirements can be found in Article 9 of our bylaws.

2022 WCDP Voter Guide

In 2020 the WCDP printed nearly 100,000 Voter Guides, which were walked to doors, mailed to voters, and shared at events.

Print is only half the story though, and making our online voter guide easier to use on the web and on your phone is a key goal in 2022!

Your support will decide how many guides we can print in 2022. Support this key voter resource to help #FlipLansingBlue!
