HB 2464 is a Shoot First bill—also known as Stand Your Ground—that lets people use deadly force as the first option rather than the last, even when they can clearly and safely walk away.
Shoot First laws embolden people to seek out dangerous situations, shoot first, ask questions later, and then claim self-defense. In fact, we know that the rate of gun violence homicide is much higher where these laws are in place.
This bill has passed out of the House Judiciary and Hawaiian Affairs Committees. Next Tuesday, Mar 8, the House votes. Most often bills that are passed in Committees are also passed in the full House votes. It’s up to us to make sure this doesn’t happen. Members need to know how extreme and deadly this law is.
