New Maps, Fair Pay for Home Health Care Workers & More

New Congressional and State Legislative Maps

Governor Hochul signed congressional and state legislative maps into law last Thursday. Democrats gain three House seats, giving them a 22-4 edge in congressional districts across New York. The state legislative maps also give Democrats two new Senate districts in NYC. Redistricting is a once in a decade process where new districts are drawn based on U.S. Census totals.

Comment about Rep. Bowman Sparks Backlash

“Outrage from several prominent Black groups over Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano’s comments last week calling for Rep. Jamaal Bowman’s arrest after his vote on the federal infrastructure bill have pointed to a larger conversation about race in politics.”

Fair Pay for Home Health Care Workers

Home healthcare workers provide care that allows “seniors and people with disabilities to live independently and with dignity in their own homes. More and more of those in need of long-term supports and services prefer the comfort and familiarity of home care. But right now, New York is facing an extreme shortage of home care workers, and there is a critical need to hire more workers now and over the next decade to meet the overwhelming demand.

The high turnover and difficulty attracting new home care workers is driven by low wages and unstable work. Home care workers are joining together through their union 1199SEIU to fight for fair pay for home care. Our home care heroes have earned and deserve a living wage so they can support their own families.”

FIVE TOWNS: ONE BOOK.
Bringing our communities together for an important conversation around The Sum of Us by Heather McGhee.

Featuring a discussion with the author, Ms. McGhee, on Sunday March 27th, 2:00-3:30pm. This will be a hybrid event with a limited number of in-person tickets available as well as a virtual option to participate.

IW is proud to cosponsor this event. New York Times Bestseller The Sum of Us offers a powerful exploration of inequality and the lesson that generations of Americans have failed to learn: Racism has a cost for everyone—not just for people of color.
