It’s Time to Speak Up About the Maps
The IRC’s Congressional and Legislative District Draft Maps for Northern Arizona create districts that are so uncompetitive it will be hard to find candidates and hard to motivate voters.
Two hearings are coming up in the next week — Saturday and Wednesday. Please attend both if you can. Attend one if you can’t attend both. Details:
The Independent Redistricting Commission will hold its First Virtual Town Hall, SATURDAY, November 6 Commissioners will accept public comment starting at 10 a.m. until all comments are heard. You must register in advance to speak — no later than 9 am Saturday. We urge as many as possible to speak at this meeting.

Our local, in-person opportunity to speak is WEDNESDAY, November 10 at 6 pm, at High Country Conference Center. Please plan to attend.
How to prepare: Keep your comments short — you will have at most three minutes to speak. If there are many registered to speak, the time limit may be two minutes. (1) Briefly introduce yourself, (2) make your main point, (3) Thank the commission for its work (4) submit your testimony in writing (instructions below). Write your testimony out in advance and read it aloud to make sure you are within the time limit. Attend one of our County Party Zoom meetings on Friday for more advice and answers to your questions.

You can view the Draft Congressional and Draft Legislative maps here. There is a link to a form to provide feedback on each map. The Navajo Nation has submitted a map that goes a long way toward correcting this problem at the Congressional level. Our Coconino County Board of Supervisors has submitted a map, endorsed unanimously by the Flagstaff and Sedona City Councils and others, which makes the legislative maps more favorable. We’ll want to support these alternative maps.
You can submit your testimony or make written comments about the Draft Maps without oral testimony using the “Comment” links at the listing of public hearings on the Commission’s website. Each hearing date has separate comment links for the Congressional and Legislative Maps.

YOUR COMMENTS AND TESTIMONY SHOULD BE SUBMITTED ON YOUR OWN BEHALF AS A CITIZEN. We can provide you information about the issues and process but your testimony and written comments are your own and not those of the Democratic Party. Be sure they reflect your own beliefs.
