Action AlertProtect the gas tax from abuse.
City Council will be making the final decision on the 6-cent-gas-tax on Wednesday, May 26!
The biggest concern with the tax is that the Oversight Committee ruleshave been removed from the proposal. It’s time to pressure the City Council to re-introduce ethical rules for an Oversight Committee before this Wednesday!
Today is your only chance. Let’s do it.
Send a email today to your council people including all at large council members. Find their contact info here:

Does this statue represent you?
The monument, Women of the Southland, was erected in Springfield in 1915 to honor the women of the Confederacy. It is among the statues that local activists have targeted for removal.
Hope McMath and Bobby O Connor, local activists, are planning a video collection of 100 women explaining why this statue does not represent them. Each video would be no more than 2 minutes. The filming would tentatively begin in June and occur on Tuesdays and Saturdays. The videos would be shown on social media. This is your opportunity to speak up. If you would be interested in starring in a video or having your say, please contact

ICare Scored a Home Run this Spring
State Attorney Melissa Nelson committed to work with ICARE and Sheriff Williams to develop an adult civil citations program. She also agreed to meet with ICARE by June 1.
Law enforcement agencies who participate in this program may, at their discretion, issue a civil citation to an adult who has committed certain misdemeanor offenses instead of issuing a Notice to Appear or making a physical arrest. Those folks given a citation will have to pay a program fee, participate in a crime specific educational program and complete community service hours.
Sheriff Williams has agreed to
- track 911 calls and other key data points
- work with Ms Nelson on Adult Civil Citations
- report the number of shootings resulting in injury on their open data website
- make contact with the National Network for Safe Communities to do an analysis of Group Violence Intervention. https://nnscommunities.org/strategies/group-violence-intervention/
- apply for the Crisis Intervention Team International Program Certification https://vimeo.com/533695447
As the weeks go by we will provide more information regarding progress on these promises, the meaning of some of these programs and actions you can take to help our local community be the best that it can be.
Meet Garrett Dennis
Mark your calendars for Flag Day, June 14th, and celebrate with fellow Democrats at the biergarten behind Buchner’s Bierhalle in Murray Hill. This is another event organized by the Democratic Precinct Committee People for Precinct 1404.
City councilman Garrett Dennis will be our special guest. The councilman has arguably been the most outspoken critic of questionable Curry administration policies. He will be on hand to talk policy with us between 6:00 and 7:00 p.m.
Of course, you can remain there beyond 7:00 and continue enjoying Buchner’s beer, wine, and German food, as well as wonderful conversation with fellow Democrats.
Buchner’s is located in the rear of 1188 Edgewood Avenue South. Clients enter the Bierhalle through Black Hat Vapor Company. Keep going to find the biergarten.
More information is available on their website: http://www.buchnersbierhalle.com/
The Burnout Done Burned Out.
I think I have been recovering from burnout and want to thank the wonderful crew who have kept cautious and patient contact to see how strong the fire burned.
I’m ready to jump back into action and am anxious to hear where each of you is in the eternal call for justice. I hope that together we can once again bend that arc.
Sincerely,
Ila Rae
