This week, we move from Request to Speak to other important ways — phone and email — to keep bad bills from becoming bad laws. Once bills have passed through their stacked committees, they move to the floor of the final chamber–but our pressure can still keep them from passage.
So far, the worst of the voter suppression bills are in limbo, but pressure on legislators is mounting behind the scenes–keep calling your Representatives, as well as Speaker Rusty Bowers (602-926-3128). Tell them that their voters do NOT want access to the polls reduced, and that it’s bad for Arizona businesses to risk the backlash these voting restrictions will cause.

This is going to be a disturbing weekly to read, because the bills moving this week are extreme. We’re now seeing the choices voters made for the legislature in November taken to their logical conclusion. Elect clowns, expect a circus — elect extremists, expect authoritarianism.
What to do? First, defense. We must keep the extremists from taking our entire state down with them. That means stopping as many of these bills as we can. Staying vigilant will be extremely important, as committee hearings have ended and floor calendars are released only the night before, giving us very little notice that bad bills are going up for a vote. Second, offense. CEBV is already planning ahead for 2022. We must help voters connect the dots: in only 18 months, every state lawmaker will be on the ballot. We’re creating regional legislative working teams that will work in their communities to make sure as many Arizonans as possible understand what their lawmakers truly did (and didn’t do) this session. We are glad to report that, thanks to your activism, teacher attack bill SB1058 did not make it through committee and is presumed dead
However the massive ESA voucher expansion bill SB1452 and STO voucher expansion bills SB1041 and SB1118 could still be heard on the House floor at any time, as could Prop 208 attack bill SB1783. All told, these bills are set to siphon $1 billion away from public schools every single year.
The only thing keeping these bills from passage is our engagement, so let’s keep it up!
