LEADERSHIP IN CCDP & PENINSULA DEMOCRATS
As we mentioned in our county meeting last month, the Charleston County Democratic Party is choosing new leadership in March. We wanted to remind people interested in running for Chair of the party that the nominating committee is currently accepting nominations. If interested, please email Ben Pogue at ben@benpoguelaw.com.
Additionally, the Charleston Peninsula Democrats are accepting nominations for the club’s 2021-2022 leadership team! LEGISLATIVE CALLS TO ACTION
As we mentioned last week, S. 1, which is the six-week abortion ban, is currently being discussed in the State House after passing the State Senate. This bill is specifically crafted to go up against Roe v. Wade in SCOTUS. It will cost taxpayer money, and it could likely cost the lives of women and girls in our state. It outlaws abortion before many women know they are pregnant and causes them to have to undergo extremely invasive procedures to jump through the exception for rape and incest. It also loops in law enforcement without the consent of women if they report rape or incest, and our own sheriff, Kristin Graziano, is against this provision. This bill will primarily hurt poor women who are unable to travel out of state to seek an abortion elsewhere. Women of means, no matter political ideology, will still seek abortions. And overall: abortion is a form of women’s health care. It doesn’t matter if you like it or not. It should be a decision between a woman and her physician.
The bill received a favorable report from the House Judiciary Committee yesterday along party lines and is now headed to the House floor, probably next week. We must tell our state legislators to vote NO on this bill. We cannot sit back and just let the State Legislature declare that the women of South Carolina do not have control over their own bodies.
Furthermore, the State House is also discussing an open carry bill (H. 3094) that would allow people with permits to openly carry handguns in public. This would be a very dangerous policy for our state, putting more strain on law enforcement and business owners. Additionally, the children of South Carolina, who already have to go through active shooter drills, would grow up seeing openly carried handguns as well. Finally, passing this bill will open the gate to less regulation of gun carrying, as other states who have passed this have gone on to remove the training requirement, which has already been proposed in other bills filed in the state legislature.
We urge you to voice your strong opposition to these bills to your representatives and to take to social media to make these opinions clear.
